I have had discussions with the manufacturer Interparts today, who have been very helpful, they do manufacture all the products they sell in China, but the factory ships in raw materials and they manufacture from scratch in house, they operate to ISO 9001:2000 which is a quality management standard.
The CV joints will be investigated by the technical department as soon as I have them back from the customer and can supply them to interparts. Each joint is laser etched with the batch and because of the TQM system they can track it right back.
So as soon as I hear from them I will post the findings on the forum.
Thanks to all for such an entertaining thread.
Syncrospares UK - T25 specialists, parts & servicing
I'm aware that public forums can generate uninformed, misinformed posts and threads that develop their own momentum in the wrong direction, some even akin to conspiracy theories...
...as well as generating truly informed opinion and comment.
One reason (excuse if you like) that comes to mind for the general evinced in posts above, could be the fear that 'Blimey! We have a batch of rogue front joints in UK stores, we don't need that, let's excise this devil asap!'
Yes, we should take a step back now, even though it's apparent that the concensus above is along the same lines, that either a heat-treatment step was missed, incorrectly performed, or the base material composition and delivery state incorrect (making even any subsequently correct heat treatment incorrect).
...but it isn't easy to picture an installation or usage scenario that fits the outcome; product storage & handling, even a drop from height onto a hard surface is hard to equate with such a failure, for a properly specified and treated component of those dimensions.
It's perhaps worth noting too there's a couple of engineers posting here who would likely have experience of design, specification or testing of such items at some stage of their careers; not making them right of course, but hopefully more than others realising that 'technicians know what they know, engineers know what they don't know'.
Wouldn't like to think you would even consider not posting on 80-90 forum freely, without let or hindrance...
*Addendum - Without prejudice to the reasons for the above failure
We have similar situations on 80-90 Tech with fuel-hose suppliers of grand repute (good previous name) who have unwittingly been supplied with dangerous, incorrectly specified parts.
We have had members verifying that even in the marine industry, fully certified and stamped fuel hose has been found to be far below correct specification, and distributors now have to test a sample from every batch, even though the hose is stamped and sealed with the requisite body's correct spec.
Even in the aviation industry, although not a big problem for production, as far as aircraft and airline maintenance is concerned, this has become a serious problem, and implicated in some hull losses.
And then we have also witnessed suppliers with known names, who wouldn't care a hoot what was in the package, as long as it looked like the right part, was stamped with something looking official, and made them a profit (preferably larger than a well trusted product).
Perhaps that bears on the reaction of some of the posters above.
Additionally it is implicit and understood by most that accidents can happen, faults can occur, and that culpabaility may often lie a long way from the direct line of supply.
For both shafts to fail we have to ask further questions, as many have seen Syncros driving for hours up and down slopes with only one front one working driveshaft, using a locked differential.
In case you haven't noticed a couple pictures have been put up in the first post, so they're hiding there..
I don' think they tell us much, but they are definitely snapped...

I think they do tell us a bit and looking at the pics you can see the twisting action that led to the failure. I dont think they snapped as a snap would give a much cleaner break. My first impression is that the heat treating either failed or wasnt there in the first place. A reason for heat treat failure could be that the material was not the correct material for the process. This is a manufacturing fault and I cannot imagine how anyone could claim incorrect fitting to be the cause of this.
As I said before I would also be looking at the wheel bearings, seals and drive flanges for damage.
they look like the chocolate rear wheel bearings that Glen had - crap metal and no heat treatment - why the f do we let anything from China into the country
oh yes I forgot because we their bitch now they own half the banks bought with the profit from selling us crap we didn't need and taking our quality waste and adulterating it and then selling it back to us, what a way to run the world
Pictures show classic plastic deformation / yeild failure AKA wrung off like bread dough.
This failure looks like they were made from annealed aluminium, not steel of any sort.
Clearly made from extra-malleable soft poopalloy (tm)
Horrific.

Dont keep it all in Aidan ..... go on let it out and say what you feel!!
Why anyone thinks what we (the west) is doing is a good idea is beyond me.
Europe is throwing away its future. We (the west) have been the drivers in world development, we invented the modern world, we were lights years ahead in technical knowledge, we created the concept of human rights, we have the worlds most skilled/knowledgeable workforce....................What are we doing with it?
We have almost unlimited immigration by the worlds poor & religious.
We send billions to a country who doesn't give a damn about human rights, to make complete sh!t, in slave like conditions, using the most inefficient, brown coal burning, environment poisoning, factories. So as we can borrow money, to close or factories & pay our workers benefits.
We are building a super-power that doesn't give a damn about our, luxurious/rich ideas of fairness, equality, tolerance. They are empire building, land-grabbing, resource-controlling. We are complaisant, we are helping in our own demise.......We are lazy, spoilt, fools.
If someone stood up, & said 'Vote For Me' this is what I'm going to do for our country (for Europe, for the west) No one would agree with them. No-one would go along with them. But that is exactly what we are doing. It is so staggeringly short-sighted. But we blindly carry on.
But hey....look we got cheap CV joints out of it!!!
