Towbar electrics wiring listing for reference

Post by dumpy »

Hi, I just bought a new (well, older actually) van, and am taking a few bits out to move across to the new one. One such item is the towbar, I've noted all the connections down for the refit when I pick up the new van, so thought I'd note them on here, as much as anything else so I know where I've put them - maybe they will be of some help to someone else too.

If anyone wishes to add amend (or has a reason why the fog might not have been hooked up, as I'm sure it worked on my cycle carrier....), please feel free.

WIRING FOR PCT TOWBAR ELECTRICS (taken from 1989 van with believed original lighting wiring)
Cable runs from Towbar up into engine bay, taken to cavity behind offside rear light cluster.

Using Scotchlocks or similar:

FROM OFFSIDE LIGHT CLUSTER

Towbar Cable Colour VW Cable Colour Pin Position Notes
Black/Red Red 6 - Brake
Brown White 3 - Earth
Green/Black Green 4 – RH Indicator
Grey/Red Black and Brown 7/5 – LH/RH Tail Assume for convenience
Blue/Black Not used
Grey/White Not used
Not used Blue 2 - Fog Not sure why not wired

FROM NEARSIDE LIGHT CLUSTER
Towbar Cable Colour VW Cable Colour Pin Position Notes
Black/White Yellow 1 – LH Indicator

The nearside connection was joined using a longer length of cable to bring the signal to the offside light cluster.
