No prisoners
secret is a good wet coat then go over it again and then leave for 10-20 mins, I bought a set of cheap wood chisels and used them as scrapers using care not to dig in (ie keep blade flat and square to surface) the vw original grey self etch/primer will partially come off and Its not nescesary to remove all of this.
I did the majority of mine with 3/4 gallon.

It's down to prep work and patience anyone could try 2 PAC and mess it up. Then again mine was treated to rust treatment then etch primer then red oxide then hammerite then laquer it took me two weeks to do it baremetal.
So don't be to hard on hammerite
I didnt know yours was hammerited Phil, howevefr you have seen mine and it looks like a camel painted it using its tail!!

Re: Stripping back the dreaded Hammerite!
Good luck with all the work Di,
we are having ours stripped down at the moment and there does not seem to be a great deal of metal there at all, mostly filler.
I sincerely hope that the previous owners of yours were not as creative with the filler as ours were
