t25 dg engine lack of power
Hello from a newbie.
I have just bought a t25 camper, it has the 1900 boxer water cooled engine type dg. On the way home i noticed that when cruising at 70 ish, if you came to a slight incline it started to lose power with a slight misfire, if i backed off the throttle slightly it would then pick up again. This happened all the way home about 80 miles or so, when i stopped at lights, and when the lights changed, i booted it ,and the second choke came in it went like a rocket up until about 4th gear, then started to miss again, i have checked the plugs and they are a lovely colour and are not wet. the leads and plugs look very recent, so any ideas would be great.
there aint nothing wrong with havin a tatty wedge ,that needs a tidy wedge spent on it!!

Re: t25 dg engine lack of power
those engines arnt the best, plus trying to drive it like a modern car dont help, just have to take your time with um! Good service changing the fuel filter especially might help?
I had the same engine, would be lucky to get 65 out of it on slight inclines I was down to 40-50
hence I ripped it out and fitted a scooby lump, now 70 all day long!

Re: t25 dg engine lack of power
carburetter methinks?
Sounds like you have already started to eliminate certain issues...HT leads, plugs, fuel filter etc. May just need tune up and carb check/service?
Welcome btw...

Re: t25 dg engine lack of power
Welcome to the forum.
The DG doesn't 'cruise' at 70mph happily, it's getting towards the 'thrashing it to within an inch of it's life' type of cruising. Most people who have the 2.1 only cruise at 60-65mph that's a very comfortable speed for a 2.4 tonne van.
If I was you I'd give it a thorough service, oil change, oil, air and fuel filters, plugs, cap, leads, rotor arm and then see how the old girl runs. Oh and leave the bl%dy carburettor alone, if it's still capable of doing 70mph there's sod all wrong with the carb.

Re: t25 dg engine lack of power
Clogged fuel filter? It could also be that the flost chamber is running out of fuel at large throttle openings. Check the cone filter (hidden inside brass petrol inlet on carb - self tapper will fetch it out) as it may be crudded up and be restricting fuel flow. Tired fuel pump or worn fuel pump pushrod is another possibility.

Re: t25 dg engine lack of power
Thanks for all replies, i forgot to mention, i have checked fuel pressure and it has 2 bar on idle and about 3 when revving at about 3 k, so that seems ok , will change fuel filter tomorrow, also this has a recon carb on it, and i have the bill with the setting up figures on it, but it does seem like a float height problem, will check soon.

This rather begs the question ... How fast do you think it should go ?

Re: t25 dg engine lack of power
I know it aint a Lambo,
but the problem comes in at a lower speed as well, when under load, even if i change down a gear, it still seems to lack power

If it only mises under load then it could be a lead, a coil or fuel starvation ... i.e. fuel filter. There's a growing school of thought among the hard of thinking that every fault on a WBX engine is the carb. Do you have the standard Pierburg carb ? People are binning these perfectly good carbs for Webers left right and center

Re: t25 dg engine lack of power
Yeah, on the carb issue - i'm sure you have - but check what you've got.
Our van has a 1.9DG but the previous owner has stuck a Solex on it.
We too have lack of power under load/hills and I'm hoping to replace it with a pierburg real soon, but for now I'm happy cruising at 55mph. Feel less stressed driving too - I can be a right ****hole in a 'modern'.
PLUS - at 70, you'll be drinking a lot of fuel! At 55, I get about 28mpg.

70 MPH,never been that fast in mine yet,I know I'm getting old but I keep thinking about all that petrol being used, will have to try a bit harder to get the money together for an lpg conversion, have been putting redex in at every fill up and I am sure it is running smoother and sweeter, could just be in my imagination as well I suppose!

Re: t25 dg engine lack of power
my 1.9 Dg with a pierburg carb actually sits happier at 75-80 mph, she goes along nicely at 1/4 -1/2 throttle , if I let her drop below 70 I have to use full throttle to hold 70..... It seems the gearing is just right for the engine to sit 'on cam' at this speed.
I have just done a carb rebuild, most of the problems I had before where caused by split vacuum pipes, altho I she does take much more cranking to start from cold now....so maybe more investigation is required

Actually both ! my speedo is amazingly in sink with the sat nav..... my 2006 Golf GT is way out... over reads by 10 % !
my engine is a relative spring chicken with only 87000 miles tho.
E D I T : just realised that my golf has now done more miles than the van !
