Can you use diesel oil in and old engine........CU air cooled......it's a bit rattly and smokes a bit (Blue) but only when I put my foot down

I wouldn't use diesel specific engine oil but go for the stuff marked up for high mileage engines. Halfords and the rest usually stock something at a reasonable price.

Don't spend too much though, save it for an exchange!

I think you will find that the Diesel oil spec covers petrol engines as well.
Look at the can/bottle and you are likely to see both Diesel and petrol specifications.

As Martin says.. Most oils are dual rated in any case.. just "customer marketing" labels... ie the label targets that customer looking for a diesel oil..

Ran my beetle on Shell Rimula (diesel oil) for many years. I've made my feelings known on this apparently emotive subject many times. Whatever you use, change it regular. Thats what counts most.
