Fitting side windows with expanding rubber?????

Post by VW Leon »

I have removed my 4 side windows from my converted van and had it resprayed.
I have got new rubbers from AH Schofield, the ones that you have to fit the expander in after fitting.
I have tried every method possible to fit these windows from
1, placing rubber around window and adding draw string, putting pressure on and fitting.
2, put rubber round body and string in glass gap, offering window up and adding pressure and pulling string.
3, Put rubber round glass and tried slidding it all into opening in body.
4, Put rubber on body and tried slidding glass into it.

All failed misserably, it seems we either put too much pressure ond the window pops through the gap or out the rubber.
They came out but wont go in.

Can anyone offer advise.

Or offer a hand to a desperate T25 owner in Dudley, West Midlands.

Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I paid professionals to do mine and that's also what's in the Wiki https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Ar ... he_windows" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Have you read this thread? It concerns putting glass in a hightop though, not the actual van.

Frankly I'd still be tempted to get a quote of a local professional....you might end up ruining the rubbers or breaking a glass and a professional will (should) give you 12 months guarantee against leaks.....

Fitting glass into new universal rubbers...

Place ur slightly longer new rubber on to the van around the aperture - 5-10mm should do it as old uns have always shrunk. Ends go at the bottom
ANGLE the rubber outwards slightly.
Lube up the rubber with car shampoo in a spray bottle
Push fit the glass into the aperture - very handy if u have a chum inside to push back if u go too far.
Start by pushin it into the bottom channel then work into a corner with a plastic pointer/scraper thingy or a least a platic stick - don't use a screwdriver!!
So start in one corner get it a few inchhes up then go the other way along the bottom to the other corner.
Once u have done the other corner which is the most difficult to get it should sort of hold itself in but dont trust it!!!
Complete one end then start along the top and all the way around.
Push the ends together tight now once ribbing goes in u cant do it!
Overlap the ribbing by a few centimetres to keep the rubber together.
Install ribbing with the new lacing tool u bought from JK for £6
Maybe seal it with arbour master if u it isnt tight and waterproof or u jus wanna make sure!

Main tip is take ur time and dont get stressed by it, do it when u have time!
U don't need string or wire for these it's only the factory windows that need that.
And if u try try try n havent done one then ring up a windscreen fitter he'll do it in half hour u lose £50 but keep ur sanity!

I have now fitted so many windows to customers vans and every vehicle I restore but still come across an awkward one so dont worry!! :ok

At last they are thanks to a top local windscreen fitter.

He had trouble but after 2 1/2 hours, job done.

So if you are stuck and want a fitter for the West Midlands call

Buyrite Windscreens on 01384 482954

Rob's the man.

hehe yeah the modern windscreen boys dont like doing them much do they??? Ur gaps must have been under cut originally or the new rubbers too thick in cross section - half a millimeter can "cock" em right up!
Glad ur sorted now! :ok
