I finally fixed this by buying a new coolant level sensor from Brickwerks. It was different to the part I bought from Euro Car Parts in Filton - the Brickwerks one had totally exposed electrodes, but the Euro one had electrodes enclosed in plastic except for the tips.

I was surprised because I couldn't see anything wrong with the Euro Car Parts one and it passed a conductivity test with my multimeter. I guess the Coolant Level Control Unit is very sensitive to the amount of sensor in the liquid.

very sensitive - too much or to little of the exposed probe and you will have problems. Even the amount of anti -freeze can cause problems.....

Would I be correct in saying you can test the low water sensor by simply talking one of the wires off it whilst the engine is running (and this would kid it into thinking the level has dropped and set the LED off)

I ask because, although mine seems OK in all other respects, when I try the above, the LED does not activate ( I have replaced 43 with another, = no change ).

I hate not having a low water level indicator, esp after 2 near misses with losing water ( quite a while ago now ).

Take the conx of the header tank and wait 10 seconds......there is a time delay before the LSCU triggers the coolant LED. But you are right, diconnecting the sensor fools the LSCU module into thinking you have lost coolant (but wait for the led to activate).

Yes. Mine takes about 30 seconds to come on, have you tried waiting?

No I didn't try waiting

Next time I have the lid off I will try it again - with a wait

Trouble with these vans, when you have to move, clutter, bedding, mattresses, drawers (full of carp), and some sound deadening carpet, just to get the "bonnet" open, you (well, "I") tend to only look in there if I have to, at least in this current weather anyway
