HELP. 1990 Westfalia 1.6TD Revving
When I initially start my van it starts and runs well and revs nicely. As the vehicle warms (even slightly) the revs stay high when revved and some times the revs run away and the ignition needs to be switched off rapidly. There is nothing wrong with the linkage, this happens when revving from the pump itself. Can anyone point me in the right direction please.

Sounds like fuel as opposed to engine oil acting as fuel (turning the ignition off closes the shutoff valve and engine stops). If the revs runaway then the pump is overfuelling which is probably a sticking linkage or a sticking component in the pump. Suggest you drop the van into a diesel specialist.

You're my wife now Dave................

Cheers Willy. I think you are right, I had a prod around this afternoon and I noticed that however you tweek the throttle arm in any direction it changes the revs. Even the smallest movement effects it. Thanks again.
If I'm your wife now can I have a new fuel injection pump for Christmas please.

I am wondering if you have got diesel bug in your tank. The sysmptoms you describe sound suspiciously like a Perkins engined yacht I had to deal with last summer. Over the phone I said pump, specifically governor, went off to deal with it accordingly and it turned out to be diesel bug in the tank.
This boat was used a lot and it had regular fuel filter changes and system maintenance. And it was always fueled up in big marinas with high diesel turnover.
Have you had the van long and have you filled up from anywhere or anything suspect?

I have just looked up about 'Diesel bug' and I shall have a look tomorrow at the fuel filter. Thanks for the suggestion.
