NON BOOKABLE CAMPSITES?!

Post by D&DCAMPA »

Hiya,
As normal we've left it waaaaaayyyyyyyy too late to book for a site from Thursday over the bank hols weekend.
(Didnt book in advance as didnt know if MOT would be done) and everything is booked :(
Does anyone know of any sites that dont take bookings where we can turn up and pitch!?
or know of any books/websites that may have listings?
(Have never done this before!)

We are looking at Dorset/ Devon/ Cornwall area.

Many Thanks in advance as always for your help, always appreciated!
:ok

Why not try heading for your chosen destination and taking a gamble to find a camping site close to where you want to be.

It has worked that way for us in the past (when touring we have never book in advance), try it you might be surprised....... :D

This place always has space, because its a massive farm and they just open another field!(Maybe still worth a call though....)

Keep it quiet though as I think its one of the best 'undiscovered' campsites in South West

You can also light fires/BBQ's etc

Also if you like walking you are in the heart of exmoor.

just above the campsite you posted is a place called porlock. theres a nice site in the village there, quiet, not far from the centre-pubs-beach, we were up in that area last year in june and didnt book any sites and didnt have any problems geting onto any. doing the same next week down salcombe-dartmouth area, havnt booked anywere, just going to see were we end up, bit of wild camping and campsites when we need to de-stink, its more of an adventure that way and youre not tied to the one place if you see somewere nicer  more exciting!!!

To be quite honest, I never book. I have camped in the UK and in France under canvas and now with the van and have never had any real difficulty getting a site. I never plan more than a day in advance and just take it as it comes. The BH weekend may be a bit of an issue with the popular sites but in any holiday area there are smaller sites away from the centre that are nice and clean and which have spaces. I currently have the Butford guide for the UK and the Michelin guide for France but I also tend to go to the local tourist office as they usually have camp site lists.

For Dorset, try this place http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/detai ... revid=6634" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; it's very basic (taps and toilets) but a lovely setting close to Kimmeridge Bay and fires are allowed. I think it's £5 or 6 per person per night. The ukcampsite entry says 10 pitches but it's more like 300. They don't do bookings just rock up.

We've found that most places don't take bookings these days, which is really annoying and I don't understand why not!

We recently stayed at Toms Field near Worth Matravers which was nice, there were quite a few other sites around there. If it's full I'm sure they'll give you details of somewhere they could fit you in........local knowledge! There's also Burnbake (personally I think it's over rated but ok) but I think that would be very busy........they may let you camp in the large field though?

oh and if you're planning on going to beach or staying for a few days it's definitely worth investing in a National Trust membership.
