Coolant level header tank

Just a quickie chaps how full should my headertank be when the engine is stone cold full to the top or half way between minimun and full to the top ? there is a "min" mark on thr tank but no "max" mark

Max mark on mine (original tank) is 32mm vertically above Min mark. (1 inch and 1/4 in old money)
Level should be between the two when cold, may go slightly over Max when hot (according to Mr. Haynes).

Thats Probably the other tank (Header? Expansion? lots of names) the one you get to with the engine access panel removed.

Yep thats the one i'm topping up the one which the engine cover has to be removed to get to, thats the header tank the one behind the flip down panel is the expansion tank

Header tank absolutely brim full.
Check the wiki for the low down on bleeding the system, coolant %age and specs.
You shouldn't need to be topping up the header tank if the system is air tight and properly bled.

Thanx andy i'm only topping up cos i did a flush bleed and refill a couple of weeks ago then when i retested my antifreeze protection yesterday it was only covered down to -12 so i just emptied the header tank by removing the bottom hose to drain then topped it up with more neat a/f now the vans been run and is stone cold the header tank is 3/4 full so i'll go and brim it right now, the expansion tank behind the pulldown flap is spot on

Yep, I agree with what you say as being the normal names for the two tanks, but if you study the Haynes 'Bible' the tank you call the 'Header' is called 'expansion' by Haynes in their diagram on page 3.2, and the tank behind the number plate flap, they call the 'Overflow (top up)'
Not easy to tell to what tank anyone is referring.

Page 36. Whatever you do, don't remove it without first locking the retaining flange so the 3000 ball bearings don't all fall out.
