Volkswagen & Tranporter emblems

How easy is it to remove these emblems off the tailgate? (Will be painting with a roller In the next few weeks) Are the clips on the inside screwed or a push fit? Or is it likely that the lugs/pegs on the emblems will break if too much force is used?
Any hints/tips would be appreciated.

They're just a push fit into the three plastic clips. Slide a plastic scraper or spatula under the badge from the outside till you hit one of the pegs and gently lever off.

It appears that they were also held on with a strong double sided tape as well. Is this the norm?and if so is there a special tape to buy or will silicon do instead when re-fitting?

Not sure, but don't think the double-sided tape is 'original'. Should be OK with just the clips - they should be a tight enough fit in the holes to keep water out.

removed mine off the one im breaking and they had the black double sided tape too...
