Paint Code no match

Post by andyasj »

Hello,
I have a 1986 Westfalia Joker (imported from Germany).
The paint code is LA8A but I have purchased 2 cans (both Holt but from different companies) of LA8A spray. These 2 cans match but are definitely not the correct brown (original paintwork).
Can anyone tell me where the problem is and how I get some of the correct colour??
Cheers

Was it an off the shelf or did you have it mixed there and then?

One bought on the internet the other mixed at a local car shop.
Both these match but do not match the van.
It has been resprayed but original colour is visible in places.
Original colour matches the respray.

Has the original paint faded at all? Might be a silly suggestion but perhaps worth a go with some compound to see how it comes up and compare again?
What a long strange trip it's been

Tried that.
The original paint inside the doors is still good.
The mixed paint is clearly a different shade anyway. It is not really close at all.
I wonder if the number is simply an error on the van.
Do you know where I can get a list of standard colours for 1986 to see if mine is one of those?

Sounds like the Holts database is out and you've done everything right! Had some bamboo yellow mixed last week which I think will be nowhere near. Remember someone saying that VW can sometimes get paint, but not sure if that's accurate! How did the guys who did the spray match it?

The van was resprayed before I bought it - so I don't know how it was matched.
Thanks for your helps.
I will go to a local paint shop for advice on monday.

Your trying to paint match a 20+ year old vans paint that you are not sure that is original with a rattle can?
Not going to happen.
You go to a proper paint supplier and get them to look the paint code up and there could be several different variants of the same colour, some ford colours I believe there are 14 shades of the same code!
Anyway, i know for a lot of VW whites there are at least 3 or 4 shdes of the same thing.
Thing is, car plants are the same as every other penny pinching corporation and VW are no different, they buy the paint in, and if another paint company offers a better deal they are going to take it, hemce the different shades.
If you want it to match take the van along to a paint supplier so they can get the colour swatches out, and if that doesn't work some have a spectrum anylyser to check the colour, or they will be able to tind the correct VW colour to match what you already have.
