What's this do? And why does it pop out easily?

The tube which travels from top of the picture to the bottom!

It came out the other day and oil went everywhere - I know it has something to do with the assisted brakes as it was really hard to stop! It seems to not be held in very hard. Should it be that easy to remove from the plate?

Not into d****ls but that looks like a vacuum take-off for your brake servo, it should be air-tight sealed and not loose.

Correct.....Remove them plastic clips and use a couple of jubilee clips,them plastic ones are crap as they lose their thread.

Thanks guys, I think that I am loosing oil from here - you can see the dark ring around the connection. Should oil be there - surly if it is a vacuum the oil would be going the other way? I have cleaned it up and monitoring it to see if it is historical, but I'm pretty sure it is recent.

I agree. Oil in the vacuum pipe indicates oil in the induction system which in theory at least should result in smoke from exhaust which you don't seem to be complaining about. Unless it is a very small amount condensing on the inner wall of the pipe over time and running back down. I would want to know more about this before I made it good. Like where else it connects to. The idea of the brake servo pipe coming adrift on the road doesn't appeal to me though!

tighten the clips up on the hose..run the engine for a few secs..turn it off and undo the hose and pull it off.....if it pops then the one way valve is working ..if not then that might be why your getting oil into the pipes.the one way valve is the white plastic thing under the hose.you could undo the 3 bolts and have a look at it and give it a blow out but be very careful when taking the hose off coz it IS just plastic and it Will snap off if your too rough.if its not working and you cant get it to work then buy another one way valve that will fit into the pipework just above the hose..one with hose conectors either end.local scrappy will have one on most cars on the brake servo lines that will fit.

oh..another thought too...is the whole thing loose in the plate.they are only pressed into the plate and it could have come loose...give it a wobble to see if it is.

'What's this do? And why does it pop out easily?' Point is....in my experience once running there is little chance of the pipe 'popping out' as you put it...because the vacuum makes the pipe secure (pulls together not blow apart)
Obviously it needs to be air tight of course.

Yep, checked that it does pop when pulled out after the engiene has been running. Seems to okay now - I can only assume that I had disturbed it before driving and it had never been attached from the start. Don't understand why there was oil everywhere though!
