Alternative Radio Aeriel?

Post by AngeloEvs »

Mines disintegrated and don't really want to refit one on the window pillar (can't anyway, holes gone and resprayed). Can't fit to the high top either as it's double skinned so has anyone come up with an alternative location or any comments on those that mount on the windscreen?

There was an inside front window mounted one I had a few years ago. Spanned the top of the window but you could hardly see it. It had a little black box attatched to it behind the rear view mirror (Not visable), that amplified the signal. It used the stereos 12v electric aerial supply for power.
Surprisingly it was brilliant. I didn't think it would work all that well but I was in for quite a surprise!
Changed it now due to different set-up but it was good. No more of the usual problems of external aerials either (leaks, vandals etc...!).

I have a Bosch Autofun windscreen jobby and it works a treat.
I paid about 30 yoyos. The antenna element is a very fine wire that is nearly invisible.
You can get replacement wires for about 10 yoyos.

Don't buy the low cost 10 yoyo versions, they don't work.

Thanks Titus, should have bought the Bosch but got one from Halfords instead and...............IT'S *&*&* USELESS! Won't pick up a single station even with the damned thing out of the van and on the roof let alone on the windscreen! Yes it is wired correctly. Taking it back as it must be 'duff'....stuck a short length of wire in and radio works fine even with it slapped across the dash. :x

You should be able to knock your own up.
Some fine enamelled copper wire the centre of which is soldered to the central core of a length of auto co-ax.
You cold hold it on the screen with a small dob of silicone, ty-wrap the co-ax to the rear view mirror to provide a stable mounting.
My Bosch Autofun has virtually no ground plane (a 30mm disc of alu is fixed to the windscreen and the screen of the co-ax is connected to that.

The length of the wire will determine you aerail's capability.

Hiya Angelo, don't know if you noticed on The Bus but we have a CB aerial through the side of the N/S front 'wing' and a rubber duck styleee radio aerial through the O/S. These come through behind the headlight units.

Hi, anyone bought an areiel recently and can recommend it?

From the options of my Caravelle, I assume once upon a time, I had the original windscreen with integrated ariel, but it seems its been replaced with a normal one. Got a bit of wire hanging going from the powered aeriel box under the passenger side of the dash upto the "climing onboard" handle, but reception isnt the best.

Are there aeriels that simply lay on top of the dashboard available, or I just need a bit of exposed wire to plug into the powered aerial box?
