Alternator - locking off the pulley

I found out yesterday that my alternator is only putting out about 12.5 - 13.0 volts.
As far as we can work out it's the original and with 270,000 Ks on the clock the commutator is way below the limits.
The standard one is 65amp, I am thinking of upgrading this to 90amp as they are cheaper than the 65amp versions.

My question is - how do I lock off the alternator pulley to release the securing nut?
I remember doing something similar in the distant past on an old Escort and I fubarred the pulley, something I don't want to repeat.
Any tips?

Get a nice snug fit straight ring spanner, hang it on the nut and give it a very sharp crack in the undo direction using a lightweight hammer or similar using the inertia of the rotor to apply the oposing force. Another way is to use an old fan belt, one or more Mole wrenches and lump of shaped wood as a self tightening "chain wrench" device.

PS Don't forget to the mostly pathetic squirt of your favourite penetrating oil to stop the nut binding once you crack it.

Have you thought about replacing the bushpack/regulator? available for about a tenner posted and changed in a few minutes.

But I think my original is too far gone.
I just snagged one from der Bucht dem Flöh for 139,00 yoyos.
It's a 90amp job and apparently fits straight on (according to the sellers info.).
The workshop quoted me 320 yoyos plus fitting - nice!

i fitted a refurbed one to my sons van last year got it from gsf i think, it was the 90amp version cant remember exactly how much £70-£80 maybe and it came with a brand new pulley already attached, as i had taken the pulley off the old unit ready to fit to the new one, just buzzed it off with an air gun, i always put some locktite on when refitting too.

Well despite the ebay Seller's assurance that the alternator is for a JX 1,6TD, it doesn't bloody fit!
Looking forward - the left hand alternator mount is too wide to go in to its opposite number (which appears to have a tubular shim press in) and the stay that goes from alternator right hand mount to the lower mounting is not compatible.
So that's being returned on Monday.
I did, at the same time, buy a spare regulator and despite the commutator having a lip of approx. 0.5mm I fitted that.
I now get 13,9v at about 3000rpm and the light goes out as soon as the engine starts (which it hasn't done since I bought the bus).
So that should be okay for a while.

Ayup matey, 0.5mm wear on the slip rings is not excessive at all and you will find the new bush pack will be just fine as a permanent fix.
As for the replacement alternator...well I can't comment about the right hand mount BUT the tubular shim you describe is a sliding spacer that needs knocking one way to give the required clearance (it is fairly tight but is desingned to take up the gap when tightened) at first glance it may appear the gap is too small (before this spacer is knocked one way)
