Are you sure the crank/cam/pump are timed up properly? Everything you are saying tells me the timing is off somewhere. I would check that before checking the compression, because if the belt timing is off, it will throw off the compression numbers. Even though you don't one of those AAZ's with the crappy crank pulleys, I
would also make sure all the timing belt pulleys are tight and keyed in properly to it's relative shaft. At least if the timing and compression turn out to be okay then it can only be something external i.e. the pump or fuel delivery

I had to fit a non return valve on the fuel line from the filter to the pump as for some reason I was having starting problems, did the trick. But I think you have timing issues.

Hi All,

Re - injection pump timing with cylinder head cover removed and with setting bar in slot, peg fitted into pump sprocket and rear hole and TDC mark on clutch housing was directly pointing at boss in bell housing. Timing has been set up using DTI to 0.86mm. Any cold start device was in the off position when this was done.

Compression tester is on its way and I shall also create a leakdown tester using bits of this when it arrives to provide more info.

I intend to base everything I do on the numbers.

Hopefully the numbers I get will be good, then I shall get the pump checked.

Otherwise its an engine out job

1986 1.6 Diesel Transporter Solution?

Post by nenenaiad »

Hi All,

I have been working on the T25 from above, feeling for example the holes in the injection pump sprocket and pushing the locating pin where I expected it to go.

Yesterday I decided to remove the number plate and cooling top up bottle to do a final check, and look what I found !

Image

With the engine at top dead centre, the injection pump sprocket is 180 degrees clockwise of where it should be. Look at where the notch on the sprocket is.

Furthermore look at where the peg hole is, it's in the right position but it's the wrong hole. The fact that a second peg hole is diametrically opposite the first allows you to put a peg in albeit in the wrong hole.

No doubt when the previous owner or his servant put a new belt on, they introduced the error.

I am trying to imagine what on earth the engine has been doing and how it has been running. The vehicle did a 150 mile trip when I first got it, and has not done many miles since. I have a new cam belt which I intended to put on as a matter of course, after I have changed the front crankshaft oil seal.

Anybody seen this happen before ?

Regards

Dave

I've heard of it happening, but also can't understand how it could work. I would remove the gear to make sure the key is in place. then reline everything and it should fire right up ??
