URGENT Help please- steering lock

Post by vanjam »

Have checked wiki and searched posts but can't find anything on this:

Van keys lost (no spare), managed to break in, remove steering lock and start it. Now need new steering lock and barrel - no transporters in local breakers - do other VW models use the same steergin lock mechanism and lock barrel?

Really appreciate an urgent repsonse from anyone who can help. MOT tomorrow!

Cheers

After a quick check on ETKA it seems the housing for the steering lock was fitted to most VWs of that time - Golfs, Passats, Sciroccos, LTs etc etc. Pretty much any mid-80's VW. I don't recall seeing Polos there, but pretty much everything else is!

many many thanks for that. I ended up purchasing a steering column and lock and handle set from a a SEAT cordoba 1.9D.(£20) The lock / barrel housings are identical except for the configuration of the 3 holes use for mounting the indicator etc. However the steering lock mechanisms inside are subtly different and cannot be swapped. Fortunately, I only needed to switch the barrel as the original lock and housing were in tact. (My son lost the keys in the sea last saturday!).

As I say thanks for the reply

You can pop the ignition lock out and get key number off it.
Check the haynes manual where to drill the housing.
