Hi all,
Am looking at changing the engine in my Type 25. Does anyone know of any good garages in or around cardiff that is capable of doing this?
What would the expected cost be for a 1.9 diesel conversation.
All response welcome.

have a 2l Aircooled engine. not running to well. its sluggish and dies on inclines. can only manage to get it up to 45-50 on motorway (providing its a flat stretch and the wind is behind me).
not sure what else to do other than change engine. thinking of a 2l td
just need to find a garage in cardiff area that can do the job and can take a high top.

THAT is a big conversion job and will cost you A LOT.
Remember you have to do things like install a radiator, sort out the lower cooling panel at the front, run the coolant pipes, install a heater matrix and that's before we've even looked at the back of the van where you probably won't have the brackets to bolt up the diesel mounting kit to the rear cross-member and chassis rails and then go out and buy all of the T25 mounting kit to fix a diesel in there.
I would have thought you were looking at thousands.
There's a couple of places in Bristol who might do this conversion for you, but unless your A/C van is in concourse condition have a think about selling your existing van and buying a van with a diesel engine in it already.
Oh and before anyone starts on the LPG conversion route as an alternative, remember that most insurers won't insure an LPG conversion over 25 years old and that Juzzie is looking for more power, too.

D H on reading this reply okay going garage price route it could cost a lot.And as you have said Aircooled is sought after.I have a automatic 2ltr devon dont like the engine but love the van.Being a diesel lover for the lift up roof conversion but not high top .I dont see to many devon combi with the diesel engine .I saw one on fleabay going buy now £3.500 thats a lot of dosh for a 1983 .If you want the diesel mpg it may be worth getting a doner vehicle and swopping over.

For a garage to do this(and i would only recomend a t25 specialist do it)
it will set u back £2500 to £3000 depending on cost of 1.9TD and donor van.U will need all the water cooled stuf out a van(diesle) this includes all wireing, heater matrix, all pipes, rad brackets, etc. There is cutting and welding involved and the removal of ure dash board just to scratch the surface of this job.
Personaly i would recomend u sell and purchace a factory diesle to save u all the bother.

I had a T25 1.6n diesel with a 2ltr petrol box both where reconditioned units. It was the best T25 i have had it returned 45mpg on a run the gear box top gear dropped the revs and found it did not struggle.I converted the van my self and owned it for 10 years.I sold it a couple of years ago and was dismayed to see it on ebay as scrapped with parts for sale pop up roof and the rock&roll seatbed apparently it had been written off.The Aircooled 2ltr cu T25 devon i have is not a patch on that 1.6n diesel i wish i had that lump in my van now. I will be selling and look out for a diesel combi T25.
