ooooo I think I know the answer to this one!!

It will be real techy....

open the hatch, you will see the airfilter on top of the carb. on the right hadn side of the filter there is rubber pipe that goes down to a plastic tower/chimney. This tube is your breather..... If it has collapsed, replace it. You can remove the tube and tower and give it all a good clean!

ps - go to the wiki above, and click petrol engines from the menu. It has a piccy showing a water cooled engine - you can see the breather clearly!

as you stand , knees against the numberplate, look directly down, its the tower shaped tower just between the alternator belt and the carb, just ever so slightly to the right of center, with a 3/4 inch ish diameter pipe connected to the air intake of the carb..... this pipe often goes "squishy" and kinks and blocks itself,[img:640:480]http://www.club80-90.co.uk/techhelp/oiltower1.jpg[/img]

they are stupidly prices from VW, if they are available anymore (Over £30) so we mostly either insert a spring into them to keep them from kinking, i used a bit of flexy electrical conduiting on mine......

Funily enough when I got my 2.1 waterboxer the top of that square bottomed plastic stack pipe gismo (where the rubber pipe pushes on the side) was held on by a plastic bag and elastic band. I couldn't think how what I thought was a retaining lip or screw had become damaged. I bought a new one from a VW dealer but to my surprise the top was bonded on or made as part of the vertcal tube part. I eventually came to the conclusion that a previous owner had somehow completely missed the oil filler under the number plate flap and levered the top off so as to have somewhere to add oil! Anybody any better idea?
Cheers
