Not in the 1st post but i tend to read all the replys before posting a reply.

Kin ell we could go on forever here.....i said "roughly" for the maximum laden weight of a Sharan.

And as for 1280kgs.......that's just under 93 load rating.

Just for information purposes....not as though it's needed on here...
My SA Caravelle has a maximum front axle weight of 1250KGs(92 load rating)and 1350kgs(slightly over 94 load rating but not 95)for the rear....and that's for a maximum load...7 adults plus luggage,fuel etc.

Write something for the WIKI....don't make me laugh....i've had my say numerous times on here on this subject and yet you and many more have chosen not to listen and have tried to shoot me down by quoting VW specs....yet those specs don't apply to larger than standard VW wheels.

MMMMM, Il Still stick with 97+. Then i know im safe, and no crap from insurance companys. If we all just stick with same safe wieght. we wont be wearing out our fingertips.

By greater distance are you refering to the footprint of the tyre?

So forgive me if I'm missunderstanding your logic in this but as an example:

Take Two tyres of the same load index rating....one is a 14inch the other is a 15 inch. You are saying the 15inch tyre can handle more load than the 14?
Despite the manufacturer clearly marking it at a specific load rating.
I'm confused which worries me because I teach motor vehicle technology at a college.

Surely the load rating is the load rating whether it's a f....koff 245 on a 17inch rim or a standard 185/14.
Yes I know the contact patch would be larger so less weight per square inch but load ratings are as much about the sidewall and the tyres overall ability to handle the load.
The heat in a tyre is generated by the flexing of the tyre walls and the tread, the tyre may be wider but it still only has two sidewalls.
I would be interested to see any documentation you have on the subject.

Another point! I hear little mentioned about the wheels! these have load ratings as well and yet many of those fitted come from cars.

I think Steve and I got slightly the wrong end of each others stick... +it looks like the website with the load ratings I looked at (coz I aint at home where my index table is) is incorrect...

I understand what Steve was meaning about disregarding the VW rating for a bigger wheel... and I was saying you still have to have a tyre that can carry the max permissble axle load, which means a tyre with a slightly lower load rating than VW specs is acceptable.. (which due to the incorrect data on that website means I thought steve was wrong!! )

But in a prev thread a member was incorrectly sold some 91(IIRC) whitewall tres that DO NOT have the required axle load rating (Might have for a bay window!!? but not a T25)
