5 Speed Box in an Aircooled

Post by Tug »

Hi their...

New to this site but have had my Camper for nearly 2 years and would not be without it.....Maybe the fuel consumption though!!

I have used your forum to rectify many a problem....Great site.....

I have another query for you people..?

Will a standard 5 speed box from a water cooled van fit in to my Aircooled van....I mean splines / Fly wheel etc.
I would imagine i will have to change the clutch and linkages etc but other than that will it line up..?

Thanks

Glenn. :?:

It will fit with a fair bit of buggering about with gearbox mountings, also the gear linkages are specific to each box.

Mine seems to be noisy in neutral.....could be thrust bearing but more than likely the input shaft bearing.....

Would like to get better MPG on runs if I can.....not the end of world i suppose if its too much work.

The engine (touch wood) is great. Starts on the button every time and does not burn a drop of oil so sort of dont want too change to a diesel unit as I like the sound of the Air cooled unit.

hey glenn .. not sure if you know but the 5th gear is almost identical to your 4th.

better mpg ... drive slower, smoother and brake less.

or gas it

Have the carbs rebiult and set up and have the engine set up..

When was the last time you checked your tyre pressures?? QUality tyres inflated correctly and ensuring the brakes are not dragging (even slightly) and tracking etc are all correct can make a difference..

People report that a set of twin 40's (or similar, set up properly) can give better performance and economy..

5 speed.. not worth the hassle as the box is longer and so you have to bugger about with the nose mount/crossmember.. wont actually give you any taller gearing either..

5 speeder is the same ratio almost in top in the Aircooled box.

not worth faffing with.

dells are awesome m ore power and more economy once set right.

Sorry to hijack this thread but i could do with some advice on carbs
so far ive worked out dells and webers are virtually the same but the numbers are different
ie. weber idf 40 is same as dellorto 38. or the other way round.
and do i need weber ict or idf ? if those are the right numbers
this could all be complete poo though as it is all gleaned from different threads and forums and gossip .
One thing i do know is carbs are loads cheaper in california !
I need these to fit a 1776 CT motor..
Any info will help.

I would go with a pair of ICTs (ICT's are single choke units).. you need it to produce torque, rather than the top end power twin 38/40's will give you..

baby dells (36 drla) would be ideal.
icts are nt the best carb for the motor.
dells will give more power and better mpg and a second hand set is not too much money, (ex alfa carbs) the important bit is the drla as it signifies downdraught carbs which are what you will need along with new inlets linkage and airfilters.
