TO those who have undertaken a big engine install
I trial fitted my V6 to the crewcab tonight and think the engine may be too long, have any of you who have fitted a big lump tried moving the gearbox forward and if so was it a successfull operation?
If not I may have to hack a bit of the rear panel out, did you do this and did you have to strengthen the panel afterwards. Experiance answers would be really appreciated.
Cheers

v6 install
it will fit in there as it has been done b4 its a little easyer if you use a 4 speed box as thay are a little shorter and shorten the fingers on the mounting plate also use a small petrol gearbox rubber mount .
i have fitted 5 pots on five speed boxs useing adaptor plates and that
fits into standard engine bays

Someone I know has two Cosworth powered T3s. One he did and one he bought done, both are vans though not pick-ups.
The one he bought has a four speed box and I dont think it was cut anywhere.
The one he did recently uses a five speed and he had to cut a section out of the back of the engine bay. You cant tell from the outside though and I dont think he had to strengthen it any.
Hello bus boy what van/engine do you have?

Interesting about the cosworth powered T25s, do you think you could get me some contact details so I could have a chat with the chap.
I have been trying to get hold of a decent 4 speed for a while now and there is one down south I may purchase which has a slight fault but may consider rebuiding if it moves the engine back enough.
What king of dimensional difference would it make.
The engine fits in sweet, but my engine has no ancillaries on the front of it yet, and from pictures of the engine with the waterpump fitted it looks like there is going to be a clash.
I was looking on the winkler site and looked at the support bar, it does not look that strong. I was intending to use the one off the cosworth and extend it, but if the cosworth ones use this kit from Winkler I may build something similar with say 40mm box section, I am just worried about putting the extra weight on the chassis as this engine is alot heavier than the flat four standard VW oil burner.
I am going to start the alighnment of the engine and box tonight and see exactly what kind of dimensions I have to play with and what amount of the body work I would have to hack away.
Any pictures of the cossy lump installed would be a great help from top, inside engine cover and underneath.
The exhausts look like they are going to fit really nice, and a side blower will look good and makes things easy to complete. I have found a location for my twin fuel pumps and swirl pot.
Things are slowly moving forward and I will continue to post my progress in a build thread
Cheers

Will see what I can do mate. I could do with getting in touch as I havent seen him for a while. I know he frequents the Volkszone forums from time to time though.
Regarding the engine support, cant remember what the first one had but I know the second he built himself and was more of a cradle/space frame type affair. The cutting on this really was minimal (5spd box) and from what I recall was only the top 'lip' of the hatch at the back of the van.
My van has a Cologne V6 fitted (not by myself I hasten to add) and it has what is essentially a VW mounting bar with the F*rd mounts welded on. I have often worried about the strength of it to be honest so I know where you're coming from!!

That's really helpful acutally the link above, should be able to get the parts for mine from there!
you can see how the back had to be trimmed to fit the Audi 5 Cylinder lump into mine (not carried out by me so don't ask too many questions lol!)

Well I have just come back from my lock up and the way I have moved the engine problem is as follows:
I have swapped the gearbox around and chopped the rear gearbox moint, this have moved my engine backwards by 40mm so I should be able to fit the engine now without having to hack my rear panel and also built a engine support cradle from scratch. Bit of hard work but the end result speaks for itself

Cradle
[img:800:600]http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n103 ... CF2350.jpg[/img]
Rear gearbox mount swapped around.
I have had to hack a large section out of the gearbox mount, but when I strip it all down again I will strengthen it all up with 5mm plate and it should be stronger than the original.
Good to see some power plant transfer pictures though.

Kenny
I am not sure yet if I have to do any bodywork modifications. I will only be able to tell that when I put the full engine in, although I am going to have a look through my box of bits to see if the spare waterpump is present then I will know for sure.
Now that I have sorted the rear mount out I will have another look at it tonight and look at where the mounting plates need welding etc.
I am hoping that by close of play tonight I will have the engine fully supported on its own mounts etc.
The exhausts are a different matter, they have hego sensors on which have to remain for the cosworth engine management system, so the cats and next two boxes have to stay in there current position, that takes me to about 8inches shy of the fuel tank. I am then thinking of just bending both pipes outwards through 90 degrees and having twin pipes, one on each side of the crewwy.
There is still a massive amount of work to be done on this conversion and I will keep posting pictures as I progress, but the main issue with this thread was the clearance issues so my posts will drop back onto my cosworth v6 in crewcab thread.
Cheers for the advice, and it will still be wecolmed to chat to people who have done conversions to the T25s.
Lewis, I notices on your Audi conversion the air filter and MAF is sat on the bed, is this a temporary position or have you had to box over it
cheers

Yes, pulleys have been taken into account.
Engine cradle is now fabricated and strengthening plates tacked to chassis, just got to weld them on the I can sit the engine in its new supports.
All future posts on the cossy engine install are in the alternative engine forum as this forum is really for modified not modifications etc.
Refer to my posts on the alternative engine forum.
Cheers Guys for all the help and advice so far. LOts more pictures to come and pictures of the bodywork etc will appear on this forum when I move onto that stage.
