hi guys was looking at a syncro v6 ford conversion on ebay what do you think do you reckon its a goer or a lemon

right... to answer this we need [at least]

  • to know about the gearbox
    to know which engine has been fitted
    who fitted the engine

then someone may be able to give you some advice??

personally a v6 conv that gives 120BHP needs to have uprated clutch/gbox/anchors/suspen

my old passat 1.8T went to 130BHP and was a lot of fun but would have lasted 10mins in a brick

I know a few questions you need to ask, some already queried.

What box has it got in it and has the box been modified, if not, heavy on the loud pedel and you will be replacing it.

What conversion kit has been used to fit the V6 engine in it, there are good kits out there and bad kits.

Are the brakes and suspension good.

What will the insurance be to get the thing on the road.

How is the engine mounted to the tub, there are some poor mounting systems out there. I have decided to build a space frame for mine to keep the thing in there.

Just questions I have looked into for my V6 crewcab I am building.

just got this back from your man what do you think

the gearbox is a standard petrol box so is good to handle 112 brake horse power which is the most powerfull petrol engine the factory fit to this model and year, the engine it has now is a cologne v6 of 2.3 ltr and developes 120 bhp so is within german spec for a upgrade, the 2.8 will fit and will produce much more power but will probably knock out something in the transmission, but saying that the standard vw engines get tuned to well over 120 bhp, but reliabilety will surley suffer, this set up has been bomb proof for me and is not that powerfull but better than most. i dont know who made the conversion or when it was fitted but it has a metal extention to raise the engine cover and looks very professional, but i dont know what makes a bad conversion, this one seems nicely done. i changed the starter motor without trouble and all components are easy to get to. i got it from a importer almost two years ago, and had it inspected at the local vehicle licence and duty office to verryfy its originalty. it was a team vehicle for rosenthal autocross racing team. but i dont know if they did the conversion or not. brakes and suspension are all very good, in fact it was the best one i found after looking at all the ones at syncro spaires and all the ones on the internet for a period of 4 months searching, i wasted the whole summer looking and the next summer was a wash out and now i have a renault to use, so its been sitting and waiting but not had more than 4 weekends away. thanks for the questions, glad to do my best to answer them.

Well I suppoose it is worth looking at it this way.

Are you mechanically gifted, if not you may struggle to get people to work on it.

The fella has given you a good write up and answered your questions.

I was going to buy a v6 powered crewcab but the weekend i was going to buy it he told me he had sheared a driveshaft so i shyed away

Are you willing to deal with things as they go wrong

Parts should easily be available if it is using a stock flywheel.

V6 parts are off the shelf, T25 parts are off the shelf.

Why don't you take it for a long test drive, maybe call in at a mot station and get it mot'd. Check with insurance and make sure it is not silly money to insure.

Have a good look at it, a good drive of it, and if you feel confident, the end decision has to be yours fella

thanks dude am still a bit worried about the box but figure it could be ok might even try converting it to a turbo diesel thats around 112 bhp or getting the box rebuilt further down the line. But for the moment it is also affordable (around 3k) which is a big factor and is what it all comes down to anyway will try and have a look at it and decide thanks again for all the advice and hope your own conversion goes well Paul

Paul,

Fair bit of work converting it back to a turbo diesel, is it not worth just purchasing an un-butchered crewcab with a turbo diesel installed already.

You could probably strip the donket and box out of the crewcab and sell it, but it is a selective market for such a unit.

Best purchasing a stock crewcab and turbo dieseling that unit as it is easier to sell a petrol oil burner to another T25 owner rather than a V6 with converter plate.
