1600CT to 2.0CU

Hi, my 1600CT has hit problems so I'd like to switch to the 2.0CU. Happy enough with carrying out the engine/gearbox swop, but worried if there are any complications with the conversion to hydraulic clutch?
Gather that clutch master cylinder has fluid fed from brake reservoir? My van has a servo fitted, any ideas if this will be OK or will this need changing as well?
Can't find any reference to this in the Wiki.

My CU has a servo also :wink:

I have done this conversion before. I just bought a second hand pedal cluster from a later motor and fitted that. The most awkward thing was finding a tool to flare the 7mm hydraulic pipe to go the the rear slave cylinder.

As a matter of interest, it is possible to upgrade the CT. But it depends on whether you're buying a new, or expensive CU or not. The CT case cuts to 1776, just like the beetle and the beetle heads cut to fit the 1776.
Then its a case of twin carb kit and you've got more power than the CU.

Cheers for that Laurie. Secondhand pedal box sounds easiest route. I've a brake pipe flaring tool that I use all the time, won't this flare mate with the slave cylinder?
Is the bottom end of the CT motor OK with 1776 conversion? Tempted by this as my engine is in good nick apart from one cylinder head.
Cheap, good and CU seem difficult to put together these days.

Bottom end of a CT is same as beetle etc. Fit a type 1 cam, solid lifters and keep the compression low and you get a better motor.
Mick, from Kinky Mick's Happy Wheel Shack has a 1966cc CT with twin 40s and tailor made exhaust. Uses it all over Europe.

Right I'll give it a go. Hopefully get some 90.5mm b & p at 'freeze tomorrow.
Sorry to sound dumb but do I have to stick with CT heads or can I switch to normal 1600 dp cut to larger bore?

Use stock type 1 heads cut for 90.5. Keep your compression nice and low.
A pair of ICTs or similar will work nicely. With a stock cam, it may even be an idea to try the stock carb. It may work.

You could remote the filter and add a cooler if necessary.

Don't forget.. A CT will die if you leave the cooling flaps out!
