On to the next Red light!!!

Post by Artfuldubber »

Hi Guys n Girls,

Firstly big thanks to Ivorblueun for giving me a part number for the Voltage Regulator in a thread ages ago...although the problem in that thread appeared to be fixed by a faulty earth, it proved temporary and the real fault lay in the VR. This I ordered with Ivorblueun's part number and fitted it two days ago...electrical trouble all fixed in an instant! Cheers!!! :D

Unfortunately though I have a new problem...just as we fix the one problem which caused the little red battery light to flicker...it goes out and the Oil Pressure red light starts to flicker!!!

Yesterday it came on after driving 5 miles at reasonable speed...when I say came on, it was so dim that you could only just see it even though it was dark! Anyhow I checked the oil level which was smack in the middle of the marks. I topped it up just a little for good measure and left it over night.

Today I have just driven 5 miles again and the light was completely off all the way....until I turned into my driveway and it came on full strength, a proper Red Light!!!

What should I do guys??? Is this as serious as I think it could be? Should I make any particular checks to try and find the source of the trouble?

Obviously I have had the alternator off, and therefore the drive belt, and refitted it all, but I can't see that this would have any bearing unless I've knocked a sensor?

So there you have it...any advice gratefully received as always, unfortunately this is a bit more urgent than usual as I'm daily driving the van at present! ...or was should I say:(

Many Thanks, Art

Have the alternator checked out - I saw this on Hacksaw Bob's van recently and the alternator rectifier part (diode plate)was at fault. That may have contributed to the voltage regulator issue previously mentioned.

Cheers Beaker n Bob, yeah that is one thing to check I guess. I have ordered the two oil pressure senders as they are so cheap and will replace them as a precaution too.

Havin read a bit about the oil pressure light...some say it should flash and even be accompanied by a buzzer if it's a 'real' problem. Mine just came on steady and bright as I arrived at my house (alternator light is out now btw and behaving itself touch wood!) and certainly no buzzer...Is it later T25s that flash and have a buzzer??? mines a '83 watercooled.

thanks again guys, Art
