Hi,
Gearbox codes

http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... fo/gbx.htm

5 speed is a bit quriky (dog leg design) and not necessarily any higher geared the extra gear in a 5 speed is a crawler gear not an overdrive.
German engineers don't always get it right
If it has 4 speed now a switch to 5 will invlove swapping all the linkage from box to gear lever.Stick with the no. of gears he has at the moment

Engine swap from N/A to Turbo not the simplest,A bit late now but an N/A
1.9 is much easier.
Engine details here

http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... diesel.htm

Gearbox swap is easy, although if you use a petrol box(best option IMHO)TD box's are like hens with teeth
you'll have to swap the input shaft (easy) and the bell housing (obviously)and possably the gearbox mounting as well.
Search on Brickyard all the info. is on there.

Good luck

Hi ,
Gearbox is going to be the tricky part.
Look at the Brickyard gearbox info page, you are looking for a box with a high final drive ratio i.e small no. (4.57 would be good)search the Brickyard tech help forum and or post a new thread there. The question has been asked lots of times before.
You really need the highest ratio box you can find, for what looks like a 80hp engine from the Jetta
usually the 2.1 petrol but this is a 5 speed
The DK Aircooled box (4 speed)is my favorite, but again a bit of faffing to get the linkage to fit.
And of course finding any cheap good condition box isn't easy these days.
Bigger wheels and tyres is a cheap and easy way to up your final drive-

http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... ltwhls.htm

but then the steering gets heavy and you need power steering-
Can of worms springs to mind
worth taking to Aidan

http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/forum ... 4&KW=aidan
(no. at the end of the post)for a few pionters
By all accounts he is very good, and for what you get his work is a bargain-but that doesn't mean its cheap. :(
Like I said good luck :)

Put a 1.9 petrol box in DK box require require linkage which is a fiddle to set up on yours.Run a 1.6td with a DK box on my van.Favourite choice for me is a petrol box as easier to obtain done a few .Others on here may disagree about both gearboxes being to high a ratio .

I had the the silly low geared 1.6 4 speed diesel box......

Changed over to a Petrol 'DW' 5 speed box to make way for the 1.9 diesel engine......
What a diffrence, cruise at 65-70 all day without reving too high...

If you go 5 speed, make sure you get the entire linkage, including the gear linkage, gear lever and selector box.....
Aslo 5 speed front mount is diffrent to 4 speed.....so try and get the front mount too........coz they aint cheap to buy new!

think il try to get a 4 speed watercooled petrol gearbox
unless anyone seriously recommends against it
sounds like its just the bellhousing and engine mounting bracket that will need swapping over then

Bell housing & input shaft needs changing for the 1.9 petrol gearbox. At the same time replace the input shaft oil seal.
