I've been told the carbs you would benefit from most are twin dual 40 Dellortos. You want to run 34mm Venturis for maximum BHP, or 32mm Venturis for max torque. Likewise 140 main jets for BHP with the 34 Venturis, or 120 - 130 mains with the 32s

You need type 3 manifolds (little tiny ones) and pancake air filters to get it all under the engine cover, and a pair of inlet manifold gaskets to use as a template to Dremel out the manifolds so they fit the DG cylinder head's inlet port. Any standard aftermarket beetle twin carb linkage is the last bit you need - CB performance ones are excelllent.

These bits are available from Jim Calvert at Stateside Tuning, the carbs are best got from Alfa1750 who trades on Ebay from Italy. Just do a search for Dellorto carbs. Tell him what size engine, and he sets them up and balances them for you on a factory original syncrometer - excellent!! DON'T be tempted to put Webers on a T25 - less smooth. DON'T buy Velocity Stacks (trumpets) as they won't fit inside the small air filters!!

Thanks syncro I didn't understand much of that but it sounds impressive, we haven't had an alternative carb section in the wiki, we do now!

As far as I understand it you tap a connector into one of the carbs and connect the vacuum pipe onto that.

This info I got from a guy in Herts VW Club (Burl)........I've got 2 shiny recon carbs and all the bits together but I am having doubts about doing the conversion due to the price of motion lotion these days

If I get time tomorrow I get some piccies up

I'm sure many of us 'of a certain age' will remember re-carbing everything from Escorts to Marinas, from Delortos to twin 1 & 1/4"SU's ... all very good but jeeez did they use petrol.

Gas it ! Sod the fool's gold. These vans were never designed for speed, make the old girl smoother AND cheaper ... you know it makes sense.

You want faster .... put a 2.1 in

exactly what i put in mine, you dont need the extra strife of all the fly by wire turbo wiring loom stuff. and at 40+ mpg(on veg oil too) an engine thats only 5 yrs old, your onto a winner.
ps- dont bother trying to change gear ratios and all that nonsense, just stick a nice set of merc ml alloys on (4x4 tyres) not low profiles. job done
