Smoke Screen Help!!! AAZ TD what shall I do........?

Post by sundial »

I'd guess that my problems have been answered many times but as a I'm new to this game I'd like to ask again.

I have a 1989 TD with a recently fitted rebuilt AAZ engine (fitted previous to purchase), for the first few weeks or so it seemed to start and run ok, although now it still runs ok and performance seems not to be affected it has developed a few annoying problems.

From a cold start the van is very good a providing a smoke screen, very good if you are been tailed but probably not if its the police!
This can be limited if acceleration is applied lightly and gears not shifted to early.
If the engine is not'caught' by the accelerator cold starting can be difficult, this would lead me to question the glow plugs? Its worth noting that waiting for the light to go out or using the cold start 'choke' have no affect!!

Once the van as been running for a while the smoke seems to reduce and the van motors and pulls pretty good, hills and acceleration not providing a problem!

So once on the move the next problem evolves when the rear window slowly gets darker.... investigation proved oil from the exhaust...?

Oh and also once we drop below 2000 RPM..... 'the buzzer of doom' says hello!

I've previously been told the problem may be turbo related and that the oil in the exhaust could be from damaged/warn turbo seals and this may also relate to glow plug damage which would relate to the cold start problem??

I've checked for oil 'blow' at the breather on top of the engine and nothing bad shows but would like confirmation for what I may be looking for?

I have not yet carried out an oil change so I don't exactly know how much oil I am carrying, I have tried to keep the level somewhere between the high and low marks, my dipstick is the same as a 1.6TD, is this correct for a 1.9TD AAZ engine?

Thanks for reading my post to the end, please provide me with some 'good' news.............!

Any help or suggestions would be appriciated. Ta

Im not a mechanic but I have experienced the exact same problem with my last engine.
Get your oil presure checked. If the pump is worn the turbo will be starved of oil (+ the rest of the engine) and then the turbo fries chucking out oil into the exhaust. If you leave it too long the whole lot will give up the ghost. The buzzer of doom is telling ya something.

Has the dipstick been remarked?
Generally, if you empty a AAZ and add 4.5l then the oil level will only go up to the bottom mark on the dipstick.
Basically use the lower mark as your upper mark.
Could be all sorts, there are lots and lots of really badly done AAZ conversions out there.

Thanks for the response, the smoke is a whiteish in colour, but only blows when the engine is revved.(thats when the van standing on the drive).

I'm changing the oil this weekend and will ensure that the correct amount is used, does 4.5l include the oil filter been fitted?

Thinking ahead, if the 'oily exhaust' still persists what diagnosis could be used to prove the turbo is 'blown' or prove the oil may be coming from elsewhere...hopefully not!!

Assuming it is the turbo, is it a bolt off, bolt on part which can be carried out at home or is it recommended to leave it to a specialist.

Is there a simple procedure to replace the glowplugs, I guess by looking the fuel pump would need to be removed...is this the case?
I've tested the electrics to the glowplugs and the relay switches ok.

Any help at all is appreciated. thanks

re glow plugs... leave the pump well alone, remove the injector branch for access(pipes), you will have to remove the injectors on the 2 cylinders nearest the back of the van unless you have very thin hands to gain access, the glow plugs are 10mm, i have found in the past it can be easier to undo each plug and then get a magnetic tool or screwdriver to lift them out or one of those cheap claw thingys you can get from the pound shop..... could possibly be a head gasket problem also ....
