1.9- 2.1 conversion oil cooler

Post by Hacksawbob »

I am thinking I could T into the rubber pipe that goes to the heater and also T into the return from the the heater to plumb in my oil cooler, I dont fancy replacing big pipe, pump and thermostat housing! Does any one have any thoughts as to whether this will affect the cooling system? the only down side I can see is that the heater may be robbed of pressure.

On my early system i just redirected the heater pipe through the oil (warmer) cooler, on the late system its piped in anyway, i have the metal bendy pipe needed if its a late system your on..........

It is a late 1.9 system so I need to tap into it somewhere that isn't going to rob coolant from somewhere else. In Bentley some automatic models have a automatic transmission cooler teed off the heater system.

If in the heater line it would only work while the heater is on... which is fine and prob not required in winter...

Ise the manifold and carb heating loop where it comes back to the pump T... down the to oil cooler and back to where you cut it..
The std 2.1 cooler pipea are very small diameter (metal bits) so flow should be good..

Hi Si, I would tee into the heater hose as it leaves the main pipe from the pump take a pipe to the oil cooler then fromn the out to the return pipe from the heater so it would run weather the heater was on or not. If the heater was off thenn the full flow would go to the oil cooler if the heater was on it would share it. From what I can work out the "oil cooler" is misnamed as on engine start up the coolant is heating the oil, it only becomes an oil cooler once the engine is hot. A better name would be the "engine heat distributor" In cold weather it could help reduce engine wear. not necessary but a handy addition. I'll take a look at the carb loop though. Thanks.

OK.. but the cooler will always be supplied with the hotest water, rather than the cooler (potential) water from the carb loop..
Yes its a warmer and a cooler.. but its more critical that the oil is cooled when its being worked hard.. most engines dont have oil "warmers", so I would go witht he "cooling" side...

Of course you could fit a couple of valves so you can have it warming the oil from cold and cooling it once at temperature...!!! lot of faffing though..

I wouldnt T in.. I would use full flow from the carb outlet to the cooler and back to the metal pipe... will be doing this to my "DJ'd" DG shortly.. (has survived some hard runs so far though!!)

Oh, mine goes from the carb to the LPG vaporiser and then it will go to the oil cooler... wont see much of a cooling effect from the LPG.. the hose is still pretty hot when it comes out!!!!
