do you hear a 'click' when you turn the key?

might be the starter motor, or the bush that it sits in are shot. remove starter motor, test direct on a 12volt battery it should spin freely like.... an electric motor. Replace bush (copper like ring in the bell housing 30p from GSF) and or replace starter motor (£60 from GSF exchange) depending on how you found it to run out of the van.

Sounds like you have disturbed the connections at the battery.
Are they tight and secure?
Have you got the battery the right way round?

Check the +ve cable between the battery and the starter motor.
