Cylinder head leak further advice wanted

Post by Hacksawbob »

I've traced the source of the leak it seems to be coming form the upper front right cylinder head bolt (under the air filter) do I tghten the bolt and risk snapping it ? Or if I send it in to be fixed, is it likely to need the engine stripping and re-building (bolt rot) as this may affect who I send it to to be fixed. Dead peeved as I have always used VW coolant at 50/50 strength but I suppose it could have been running on other before I got it.

Hi Bob
THis dosnt necesarely mean a corroded head stud..When the bolts are fitted
u use a sealant on them. This with age could have given up.As a firt step u could try removing the head bolt(must degrease before refitting)and refit with new sealent(drain coolant before prosedure)
This is a chance attempt that may well work and buy u time with ure engine.Worth a chance.
If this fails then u need to remove the head on that side for inspection before a conclusion on the work to be carried out.
DO NOT JUST TRY TIGHTEN IT! This will not work and will gust put more strain on the stud.
Cheers
