i`m going to buy a CHEAP car to drive while i sort the van out, when i`ve done all but the engine i want to take the engine out the car and put it in the van, i want a 1.9 NON TURBO so i can use the sump off the 1.7 NA thats in it at the moment. i know it says a lot on the forum about using golf, passat and some seat engines but are some models better than others and are there some that i need to keep well away from. what are the best years to look for. my van is a 1990 1.7 NA crew cab and this needs to be a cheap project but i need the car to drive while i`m sorting the rest of the van.

Looking on ebay and the skodas seem real cheap. would this be a good choice and what would you advice as the best model and year to go for ?.
i have read alot of previous posts and read the wiki but car`nt find the info i need to give me peace of mind.
The worst variant of the 1.9 is found in polo's, everything been moved around to make it fit. Other than that any 1.9 with mechanical pump, best chance of finding one is mk3 golf, passat, seat toledo.
some skodas on ebay between 1992-1998 would these be a good choice noticed some have the dipstick on the wrong side, any advice PLEASE as van is about to die so need something to drive while i sort it out.
