Sliding Door Handle

I recently won one on Ebay-for 99p,which was nice. A NOS one at that. Anyway, instead of it having a normal lock in the barrel with a double sided key, it has a kind of yale lock barrel with only a single sided key. I can lock it and take the key out, but I can't take the key out when I lock it. Also when I do lock it, I can no longer open it from the inside. Is this normal? When you turn the key it pushes a pin out of either side of the lock mechanism. I didn't have a key for my old handle so just locked and unlocked it from the inside.
