Please help us plan our holiday

Post by Ivybvus »

Hi there - we are sitting with a road atlas, camp site book and the internet open before us... We are looking to come up from Devon and "do" the south coast - finishing in Brighton. About the only two things we have got sorted is >

Our first stop will be in Lym Regis
Our last stop will be in Brighton for two or three nights

We are looking for interesting places in between for one or two nights at a time

We will have (pedal) bikes for getting around, like pubs, walks, culture, history and did I mention pubs :) - this will be the first holiday without the off-spring so would like to make the most of it :D .

Any recommendations/ideas on sites, places to go, things to do and did I mention pubs?

Thanks in anticipation

Swanage, Corfe Castle and Sandbanks are nice places in the same area.

You definately have to visit The Purbeck area in Dorset. As mentioned above, Swanage is in this area. It is a most beautiful area. One of the best pubs you will ever find is The Square and Compass in the little village of Worth Matravers. They sell local beers and ciders, and the menu consists of the most delicious and wholesome either a meat variety or vegetarian option pie. All home made. Definately worth a visit. Lovely walks from there too.
There is a very good camp site at Norden, if you book to stay there you will have Swanage, Wareham, Corfe Castle, Worth Matravers aall within easy cycling distance. And of course the famous Sandbanks beach nearby too. Got just about everything. Good luck and have a great holiday.

The Smugglers Inn in Osmington Mills just outside of Weymouth is a cracking pub. Had a lovely meal in the beer garden a couple of years ago. Nice beer and very close to THE sea.

Also a nice campsite called Eweleaze Farm just east of Weymouth but its only open in Agust and you'll need to book asap as it sells out quick. They do nice lamb burgers for you BBQ in the shop at the campsite.

Dancing Ledge at Langton Matravers in Dorset is worth a walk to. Good fossil hunting in the area and if you can scramble down to the ledge there is an open air tidal swimming pool blasted into the rock!

I love West Bay just about 10 miles (maybe a little more) along the coast from Lyme Regus heading East the cliffs are amazing. Note sure about where to camp or pubs but the beach is definately worth a walk along, just to look at the cliffs. Simply spectacular.

The other place is Beer, which to be fair is before you get to Lyme Regis as you head out of Devon from Exeter so to be fair you may have been there, but again its a lovely fishing village and the cliff is called Beer Head so that is worth visiting just for the name! Lastly there is a really interesting quary at Beer you can tour.

Hi, I agree with comments about the Pub at Osmington Mill, near Weymouth, it is one of our Favs. Fab views from the Car Park there too. There is a lovely pub in the New Forest called The Red Shoot it has a campsite too...not been in the campsite ourselves but it is recommended on this website. The Pub does amazing food and the Forest is a gorgeous place to camp. There are other cheaper sites in the Forest too, depending on what you are looking for. EG facilities wise and plenty of nice pubs!

Whatever you decide there are certainly many lovely places down here to chose from. Highcliffe, New Forest, Lepe, Chichester, West Wittering Beach...... Have Fun! :ok
