We love pootling along the Loire.

Saumur is a well know place to stop along the Loire but there are, in my opinion nicer, less touristy places.

Amboise is like a mini Saumur with a lovely town - reasonably priced municipal site there too.

We also stopped another year at Langeais - again a very cheap municipal and a lovely little town but with a large chateau right in the middle of the town. We stopped for a couple of beers in the shadow of the chateau.

A couple of times we have started at Tours and driven along the Loire just stopping here and there as we fancied it.
