Cornwall - when and where to go

Post by ghost123uk »

Not doing France after last years disappointments

Doing Cornwall instead :ok

No ties so can stay as long as we want (or not ;)) - Don't want to spend too much time driving around, so looking for recommendations for campsites. We like "basic" farm type sites. We aslo know that Cornwall can be busy at peak holiday periods, so we will go outside the school holidays (in fact as soon as the weather is likely to be ok will be good).

I have started by making a note of this from Devon Mark off a different thread :)

DevonMark wrote:If you find yourself in the far south west of Cornwall, Treen Farm has amazing coastal views from all pitches. It's also very close to an excellent pub. Took the T2 we hired last year there for a night in May.

Any suggestions folks :)

Treen is THE most amazing site to stay... BUT you can't book a pitch! You have to arrive at 8am put your name on a list if there is no room that day and wait.. Such an a*** idea but I guess it keeps the party people out! Very cheap and not ferrel basic! But has to be one of the best locations in the country !!! But tell NOBODY :ok

Gwithian Farm is a good site. Slightly on the large size for a farm site, so not quite as atmospheric as Treen Farm, but at least you can book in advance...

Atlantic View near Porthcothan is more basic. Basically just fields on a (windy) stretch of coast, a short (and nice) walk from Porthcothan. It has a shower block etc. Not sure about hook up - we were in tents last time I was there!

Just searched for images of Atlantic View, this is what Google came back with:

We had a week here the other year and its a great little site and the owners are rantastic. Very close to the coast path and some great bays very close. Hopefully jambo will be fit for the drive down , if not the polos gonna get a tow bar fitted and the trailer will be getting some use.

Really liked Henry's at Lizard as well as Dennis Cove at Padstow (purely for it's locality to padstow and the camel trail, pubs, pasties, ice cream, coast walks)

We used to stay at Trewan hall just outside St Columb Major between Padstow and Newquay.
It's a lovely site with no set pitches and a large field to pitch where you like surrounded by woodland walks and a fantastic free library. Very busy in August and a little muddy if there is lots of rain.

Churchtown Farm campsite is our preferred site now, as recommended above, beach access, shop onsite, new shower block and a pub across the road. Avoid August though because they have an extra field that they use for 4 weeks of the year that swamps the amenities a little. August is usually fully booked months in advance anyway.

I would recommend a visit to Bude in north Cornwall, the campsite we used was a Caravan and Camping club site but the town itself is lovely.

If I was going to do an extended trip. I'd start in N.Devon at North Morte Farm, then head down for a bit of wild camping in the car-park at Widemouth Bay. Next stop would be either Harlyn Sands or Treyarnon. Then skipping Newquay, down to Perranporth to stay in the site on the edge of the village. The final stop on the North Coast would be Blue Hills at St Agnes or Gwithian Farm and then Trevendra at Land's End. (If flush with cash Ayr in St Ives is in a great location but pricey.) On the South Coast Henry's is a no brainer, then on to Treloan and probably finish of at Looe at Bay View Farm.

My choices are based on spending most of my time body-boarding & coastal walking. As for when to do it definitely outside of the school holidays unless you bring a cattle prod. :D

Played a gig at Keveral Farm on Saturday and stayed in their campsite. Beautiful location and perfect if you're looking for a basic campsite that feels like it's in the middle of nowhere - it's situated about a mile inland from the stunning stretch of coast between Seaton and Looe (the beach at Seaton can been reached by walking down a green lane, it's lovely). Still only a few miles into Cornwall though, so a usefull stop off on the way down to West Cornwall.

http://www.keveral.org/camping.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Being a hippie commune they are fine with campfires. It's quite a bumpy drive down a long farm track to get to the farm from the main road (the main road being a tiny country lane), but worth it for the isolation and peace and quiet when you get there. As it was a mini festival it was busier there on Saturday than it would usually be, so don't be put off by the tents crowded around my van in the third picture!

Treverda Farm is 2 miles from land End....

Great friendly site. Hook ups or further way in the fields. On site farm and farm shop - with great BBQ food fresh from the farm !!!

Great site - very T25 friendly - cliff walk way to private beach and cove. 1 mile from Sennen Cove (stunning beach)

Well worth a visit - been there several times :)

Just spent a couple of days at a festival we were playing at Retorrick Mill, near St Mawgan (http://www.retorrickmill.co.uk/index.php).

Superb site in a stunning location. They had a designated campervan field for the festival, but I can't work out from the website whether they allow campervans to camp there at other times. If you're down that way it would be worth finding out though, we will definitely be going back there again if they do allow vans!

We went to this site a couple of years ago:Treloan Coastal Farm, near Portscatho.

For: Great sea views, 2 pubs about 5 and 15 mins walk, superb scenery, like most of Cornwall.. The August regatta thing is good too [been twice now]

Against: A bit pricey for a sort of basic site, though the loos & showers were generally ok. Shop in the village of Portscatho is a tad expensive too, but I guess they have to survive somehow... And people tended to pitch close to us, although there was plenty of room elsewhere :? Obviously never met us before  And its a bit windy, being high up so the wind comes straight off the sea; camp lower down, nearer the trees if you have an awning!

We went there last September and walked round the coast past the lighthouse at St Anthony's Head to the Place ferry crossing point and took the little ferry boat over to St Mawes and walked a quicker way back via Bothora in order to cut off rewalking the St Athony's head peninsula again. Pub in Portscatho was nice (access is quick via the coast path) and beer was normal non-tourist price

You could go to Polperro, stay outside the village at Killigarth Manor Park but be prepared to do a little walking down to the village!

Village is beautiful, but i'm a little biased as I spent many a happy summer holiday there when I was a kid, visiting family. I can definately reccommend a great Restaurant right in the centre of the village Nelsons' Restaurant has been run by my aunt and uncle for the past three decades (sadly both have passed away but their son is still working hard to keep the place going) the food is as good as ever and the service second to none. </end shameless plug> :D

(see TRAGO MILLS!!!! This store is a must visit for any camper, they quite literally sell anything and everything, think Wilkinsons over upto 4 floors depending on the store and lots of specialist sections for tools, boating, camping, shooting etc etc, you name it they probably have it, especially at the bigger store in Liskeard (not far from Polperro), you can probably spend all day in there too)

Lived in Falmouth and Penryn for a while, Falmouth is a good place to spend a day, a little shopping street lots of boating based things to see including the docks (usually a couple of large military ships in for work and sometimes the odd multi-millionaires gin palace (was visited by 'The World') while I lived there. Nice costal paths around from Gyllyngvase Beach (sand) to Swanpool Beach (shingle/sand) which will take you around Pendennis Castle (castle and second world war fortifications) past the Falmouth Coastguard (possibly one of the most important coastguard stations in the world, who help to coordinate rescue operations worldwide) so lots to see and plenty of places to sit, have a cup of tea and watch the world go by.
