Do most people on here book municipal campsites etc in advance or is it generally okay to just hit the road and then turn up at them. I appreciate that for the bigger, busy sites in busier months it's advisable to book in advance but just wondered.... I just love driving in France generally so happy to just hit and hope but the rest of the family might not feel that way...

This time of year you can just turn up. To be honest, I have never booked in advance over the years even in the summer. In busy places in the summer there are always plenty of sites to choose from if the first one is booked up. Unlike the UK there are thousands of sites to choose from over there.

Further tip. Plan to stop driving by 5.00pm in the Summer. That way you are almost bound to get into a campsite.
