Hastings

My `13 year old has suddenly discovered a fascination for history. We were talking about holidays for this year and he announced that he wants to go to Hastings to see where the 1066 battle was and explore the local history. I have to admit that I have never been to that part of the country before as we always go south west. Does anyone know any good sites that are worth staying at? Not really interested in on site swimming pools and club houses just local pubs with good food and nice walks! Thanx :D :)

How strange my 7 year old daughter is doing a project on the Norman conquest and has become obsessed with the battle of Hastings, only this morning my wife and I were discussing visiting the area.
So I will follow this thread with interest!

Funnily enough I camped there at the weekend right down the end of the beach road under the cliffs where all the black fishing huts are located. £3 for 24 hours in the car park right next to the beach. Perfect. Link to google maps: Rock-A-Nore Rd, Hastings, East Sussex TN34 3DW

I have stayed many a time and for very many years at Shearbarn. http://haulfrynholidayhomes.co.uk/south ... /shearbarn" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It may not be quite what you're looking for but is in a lovely location with beautiful views and great walks through the woods and down to the sea from the site itself. Check out ukcampsites reviews which speak for themselves really.

It does have a pool and club house but these are located amongst the static section of the park. The campsite itself is a little further up the road.

I would recommend this place to anyone :)

Hi

As a denizen of Hastings... there are lots of campsites about but a couple off the top of my head that you could try are...

Park Farm Camping - near Bodiam which has an awesome castle too...in a lovely bit of countryside. I think the campsite can get quite busy/noisy with bigger groups during bank holiday weekends/summer though...

http://www.parkfarmcamping.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hidden Spring Vineyard - this is not in Hastings but not all that far from Battle where the battle is supposed to have happened etc... It's a lovely little campsite with friendly owners.

If I think of any more I'll add them to this post...

If you find yourself in Hastings and a bit thirsty then there are loads of good pubs but my favourite is the First In Last Out or FILO in the Old Town... :D

I remember reading a book quite a few years ago about a shipwreck which lay on the beach and was accessable at low tide. I am sure it was at Hastings. it had been there for many years and only the spars were visible ,like the ribs of a long dead animal. Apparently some contractors were working near the beach and in their lunch break decided to take a scoop out of the middle of the spars with the JCB for fun. When they went through the spoil they found all manner of wonderous things and the boss quickly called in the aercheologists. The ship was called the Amsterdam and was a dutch east indies vessel which had foundered in a storm. It quickly settled in the soft sand and it seems the lower decks were inundated and left untouched whereas the upper decks rotted away over the years leaving only the skeletal spars. What was below decks remained so and was forgotten over the years until the contractors lunch break playtime. It has since been excavated and I believe Holland still lays claim to the wreck. I keep promising myself I will go to see if I can spot the remains at low tide one day. You may be able to find something about it online. I think the book was titled "The wreck of the Amsterdam"

Yeah, that's right. There are guides on the beach as to the different wrecks out there...

Also, there was a German U-boat that washed up on the beach in 1919!

"Eventually though, as residents grew sick of children pelting the boat with rocks and making a racket throughout the night, the order was given to break her up. Parts of U-118 were snatched and dispersed all over Hastings." Sounds about right. :)

Chestnut Meadows in Bexhill-on-sea is a very clean site with good facilities.
Not too far from Hastings

We always use Camping Club CL sites.
If your after the history fix then the place of the battle at Battle is pretty good, although Hastings Castle is a bit 'simply imagine'. Not too far from Portsmouth where you have the docks, Gosport and Fort Nelson.
