Any ideas for European wide camper an insurance... ?

Post by Twodogs »

Hi I am off to Europe for an extended tour (possibly starting in July), I hope to be away for a year.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to insure a camper van to get the same level of cover as UK
i.e. fully comprehensive, fixed value.

I'll phone AF in the morning, but thought I'd start by garnering your expert input.

Thanks and regards

Ian

The only outfit we could find to give us a quote for full-year-away were Safeguard, part of Swinton. We've had to have some dealings with them - a bit of a greencard disagreement, and a glass claim - and they've proven themselves mildly incompetent but generally helpful - far better than we were expecting from a "big-name" outfit like Swinton... We aren't on agreed value, though - being a Westy, we've got a solid base to argue values on, but being a specialist camper/motorhome brand, they really shouldn't try the "But it's a van, worth peanuts" line. Not that "shouldn't" carries any weight in these scenarios...

One thing to remember - they quote you a price that includes full-year Euro breakdown cover, but that isn't available if the van's over 20yo - no reduction in premium, of course... We went ADAC - not problemless, but the only show in town.

Adrian; Thanks for this great referal to Safeguard. I thought I'd follow up and give you the outcome of my enquiries and leave also leavea trail for more travellers to follow.

I just spoke to Safeguard to insure my 1984 T25 Westy joker hi-top with unlimited european cover and the usual raft of benefits - £324 per year.
Previously I was with Adrian Flux for 6 years and they wouldn't quote for more than 90 days european travel, a sister company to AF - HIC quoted £877 for the year with 8 months european cover.

Also I have just this week changed the engine from 1.6D to 1.9TDi and AF / HIC were all over it with additional questions and it took at least 20 mins to get a quote from cach company [AF price - £570 pa for no european cover]. Safeguard never batted an eyebrow over the engine mod and quoted within a couple of minutes.

No need to say which company my business is going to.

Thanks & Happy Travels
