We're thinking of visiting for a few days later this year, we've never been to this part of the world before so any recommendations for campsites and places to visit with kids will be gratefully received

Castleton and Edale for camping.
The caves in Castleton will keep the kids happy.

Chatsworth House isn't far from either place.

Enjoy...the Peak District is a brilliant place to visit/stay.

We've stayed at Laneside in Hope, close to pubs/shop and as said above a twenty minute walk from Castleton and the caverns. Coopers at Edale, great walks right on your doorstep .Loads of good pubs where you can stay within reach of Matlock with its cable car, river, Gullivers world and Crich with it's tramway museum and if you wanted to travel just into W Yorks there's a great site at Holmfirth, Holme Valley Camping where you could combine your stay with a gig at the Picturedrome.

If you love cycling there are plenty of cycle tracks:

Tissington Trail
High Peak trail
Ladybower reservoir

All are suitable for kids too

Don't forget the Manifold Valley Louey

There is a site at the Manifold Inn at Hulme End that is about 5 paces from the pub and at the start of the Manifold Valley trail which is an old railway line. You cycle 8 miles south to the end at Waterhouses. On the way you go through an ace railway tunnel (this is a short 1 miles section that is shared with cars) as well as Wetton Mill for refreshments (has a cave to explore on the hillside above it) and Thors Cave along the route. hartington is nearby which is a nice quiet village with 2/3 pubs

Cycle routes look great.

Trucker, that sounds rather good. I was thinking the same myself as I have never tried that area. If OK, and you don't mind, keep in touch and let me know when you are planing your trip and may be we can meet up some where??

You're really spoilt for choice in the Peaks. We've been going to Callow Top in Ashbourne since my kids were still babies (and it's still their favourite as there's lots to do on site), http://barnfarmcamping.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is another of our faves, more simple but with fabulous views and really close to Matlock.

There are some amazing walks at Stanage or Froggatt, a great climbing mecca in the UK, Frogatt Edge has an amazing memorial to a climber who died there, but either are great to walk along.

Near Stanage there is a great little campsite, not sure what it's called but very popular with climbers and as such has a really great atmosphere

As a kid in Stoney Middleton I used to watch the rescue helicopter on a weekend through my dad's binoculars pulling the next victim off Curbar Gap/Baslow/Froggat Edge ... either crag rats who'd fallen or got stuck or more recently people who got bitten by adders. Happy days
