Dashboard Hardwire

Post by T25Convert »

After months of having crazy gauges and flashing lights with a mind of their own, I finally cracked and had a go at hardwiring it.

The basic procedure has already been posted http://forum.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.p ... e#p7379709 but thought I'd add my thoughts (if anyones interested!)

The original connector didn't look that bad compared to some posted on here:

However, the one burnt terminal proved to be the earth, so that explained why everything seemed to have a mind of it's own!

Following the basic procedures detailed in previous threads led me to here:

You can see the vero-board in the centre of the dash (must practice soldering!) and the new connector.

If anyone is thinking of attempting this I'd suggest:

1) Splash out, and treat yourself to more than one colour wire! It would have made my life easier!
2) Line up the LED's first - this is the tricky bit.
3) Just check every now and again that it all still fits together - it will save enormous rage at the end.
4) Finally, when you wire your new plugs up, don't be a fool and forget the one in the van is a mirror image of the one you've put on the back of the dash. Felt rather silly after this!
5) Make sure you put the speedo cable right bak in, to save it flapping about at 50mph.

It took a full day to do, but it was well worth it - everything works now.

Well done, from your posting, can we deduce the following:

1. You were too idle/tight to buy coloured cable.
2. You forgot to line up the l.e.d's and it was a sod to do after.
3. It didnt fit as you couldnt be arsed to check as you went along.
4. You wired the plug the wrong way as you didnt check as you were huurying and then had to cut it off and redo it.
5. your speedo cable really wobbled about because you forgot to insert it all the way home :rofl :rofl :rofl :ok

6. If you avoid the above it will take about half a day..

Good work
Mike
