Respray

Post by MrH29 »

I have an 84 Transporter, it has very little rust, no seam rust anyways, it has a couple of small dents but nothing too bad, in fact only one as I replacing sliding door which has been dented.
Anyways I interested in a respray, I have the wagon with a VW resto specialist now, he putting it through mot, fitting alloys and tweaking a few bits. He specialises in splits n bay restoration, however he does T3's as well, I wanted a quote on a respray, he explained he usually goes bare metal full award winning paint jobs 5g+, I explained I only wanted to spend not much more than 2g, he happy to work with this, I'm looking to get similar results as when the van was new, the body is pretty straight I not looking for a candy or metallic paint job, nothing too posh, just a decent job.
I just wanted some feedback on what you guys thought around 2 grand would get me. Obviously I know certain factors are involved, I.E just how many dents or how much rust etc etc, but roughly is cool with me.
Thanks

I'd expect it to look like a new van, be very straight and last at least 5 years for that kind of money. With basic paints though, none of your flashy metalflakes or whatever they use these days. And I'd expect it to be a doors off windows out job as well.

£2K should get you a decent job including sorting out any minor dents and scratches. i paid roughly that price last summer for a full respray in the original colour, work included:
taking all the galss and rubbers out
doors off
smoothing out (ie sanding down and filling) all four wheel arches which were replaced by someone else and paid for seprately
respraying the front and rear bumpers.

This was through a mate of a mate, but you get what you pay for. defo get the glass and rubbers out or it will look sh1te. here's a picture of the finished article :D :

no just the exterior. I had to remove the interior myself - the paint work inside was pretty good though as it hadn't faded and was in good condition. The spray shop did take the doors off and including the slider and resprayed them all over. Defo go and see the workshop before you part with your money - look for signs that they know what they're doing - proper extraction system, proper dryers, get recommendations too.

hope it helps :ok

ta for now

Hi Italianjob,

where did you get your respray done? We are just starting to look into having our van resprayed as the one that was done just before we bought it was done quite badly and huge flakes of paint are now coming away. We are in London but don't mind travelling for the right place & price.

Thanks,
Jo.

The guy my van is with now specialises in bare metal resprays, his work is pretty amazing, I was reccomended him by a number of people through the brick yard, then a few other people I work with. Its just as he usually gives full body resto's he doesn't like to do anything other than bare metal full on 4 month resto type jobby, thus its pretty darn expensive, 5k+, but you get whhat you pay for. However I don't think me van requiresv such a job.

.

the last spray job i had with my mate at this price won first place at a jap show with a custom house of kolor marble paint everyone quoted me £5k + it all depends on how good thesprayer is i find and when hes cheap its a bouns :ok

some pics of my show winning car he fited the full 1 off kit fully smoothed the kit into the car the list is massive what he did i got the paint trade for £100 and he charged me £1k for the finnished car :ok

For my vans I pay £1500-£2000 for good usable van complete resprays, you can get cheap blowovers for circa £1000 but u'll be able t scrape it off with ya nail!
I would expect a bare metal concours respray to be around the £5000 mark as ur guy says.
The more work u can / dont mind doing urself the better. I always strip em right down and always remove windows at least (no body shop likes doing that!) and it always ends up a better looking job that way. If possible pop the doors off and get them to spray the shuts and all sides of the doors as again it makes the end result look far better! :ok
Thats PEET as in FEET!!!

Ive recently been quoted 2 grand for a full respray which includes repairing a lot of crash damage to the sliding door and front column (between front door and sliding door) Damage to the drivers side rear wheel arch and getting rid of all the rust. This luckily is only surface rust but they are gonna rub it all down etc. They're not gonna take the windows out but after reading on here i think i'll get new rubbers fron JK and get them to take them out. Apart from that I'm happy. Unless you lot can drench my fireworks!
Life is simple. Keep it that way!
