Hello,

sorry to hear this - bit of a nightmare - you can replace the head without taking the engine out - you can probably get yours sorted and skimmed somewhere, but it depends on how good you think your block is I suppose.

At the 3 o'clock position in this photo on both injectors, you can just about make out the cracks - I really should have noticed earlier....

FFS !! Greg ...what a complete and utter one :(
and all this because of that damn glow plug wiring

what are you thinking of doing ?..there are other petrol options now you have that big garage to play in

if you do the work yourself you will be looking at around 100 quid for the bits and the skim on a second hand head(plus the cost of the head on top of course).the other option is to buy a donor car ..

Thanks Kap - Tdi is an option, but I need the van back on the road as soon as really, and a replacement head is also a lot cheaper than a Tdi lump!!

Could you not go petrol engine its a bit of a hassle with the wiring for the ECU and gettng a down pipe fit to the silencer.BUT VW 2E or AGG possible 100 bhp + and LPG conversion option.I was looking on ebay and seen a few listed £125 to £250. My 1y engine has had an oil change&fiter running sweet but could do with the inlet manifold porting&polish after the cut&shut weld to get a few extra MPG out of her.If The engine goes on her i am going petrol for a VW AAG.

Thanks guys - camper, I really want to stick with diesel if I can. I like the economy, I've got a Triumph for speed, and it makes a reassuring chug behind me :) Billy - two of the injector seats are cracked, hence all the over-fuelling issues and running hot. I need to do a head swap at the very least...

Greg,

This is really bad news - sorry to hear it. I've just got back off hols...

For future reference, there is no need to take out the injectors to change the glow plugs. I've always found that taking off the injector pipes is sufficient.

Yes, the head can be changed with the engine in situ - i think its even possible to leave the manifolds on when taking it off - but i would leave the manifolds off until the new head is back on safely.

Good luck

Ringo

Thanks Ringo. I'm looking for a head as I type. I've found one which I think *may* fit, but it is a slightly different part number, mine is 028 103 373 and came off a '98 Seat Ibiza, and I've found one from a '99 Caddy, part number 028103374.

I'll post in a new thread to see if anyone knows if they are interchangeable :)
