Obviously cure the oil leak BUT.....carry out an oil and filter change (warm engine and drain until there is just a slow drip) then refill with the exact 'specified' quantity (look in your Bently/Haynes/or use Brick Yards info section).
Making sure you are on a flat surface run for 1 minute, stop for 1 minute then dip and MARK the dipstick using the obtained level as MAX.
If you wanted to obtain a minimum mark you could then drain out 500ml (any excess back into the engine) run for 1 minute, wait for 1 minute then dip & mark....this would get you your acceptable range.

IF it was a 1.9DF,DG / 2.1 DJ,MV,SS waterboxer (and let's assume that it is) then that would be 4 litres of MINERAL 15w/40 for minimum and 4.5 litres maximum ... including filter change.

yes it is a 1.9 diesel [not turbo] but don't know exactly from which vw it came . . .
so would the quantities you provided, ian hulley, be correct for that engine?
thanks for the info guys!
