Passat VNT on 1Z

Post by footstuck »

Hi
Can anyone tell me if the VNT off of an AFN passat
will clear the standard engine bars when fitted with a 1Z?
Thanks

My AFN turbo is away at the menders otherwise I could offer it up to a block and check. I only have a Passat AFN manifold here though not a 1Z one.

Hi Syncroandy
thanks for the response.
Is the turbo you have sent away a VNT?

If so, was it ever running on your van?
and, have you had any mods to your N/S(LH) engine bar?
Ive got a VNT under the bench, but cant afford the time to experiment as
my current turbo is still running (but sick) and the truck is working daily at the moment.
If i was sure it would miss the engine sport bars I might be tempted to stick it on
and rework the exhaust.
Would appreciate some pointers.

What manifold and turbo are you currently using on your 1Z ? If you're considering the VNT, how were you going to control it ? If you're e-TDI you would need to have your ECU re-flashed, if m-TDI you would need to build your own actuator system.

PS. I'm in the market for a good Passat/A4 AFN (VNT15) turbo..

Hello,

the AFN manifold flange and 1Z manifold flange are at slightly different angles - you'll end up with the turbine outlet pointing upwards I think. For a VNT you definitely need the AFN manifold, and as Syncroandy says - not just a simple swap even with E-tdi as the VNT is vacuum and the original 1Z turbos (GT15 or K03 thingy) were pressure actuated.

Hi,
I currentley have a watercooled 068145704f.
It gives good power, and pulls the crewcab and small caravan
at 70mph with little problem, till the seals started passing oil.
As it is watercooled it saved the need to have an oil cooler.
I guess Im demanding a lot from it, still pulls great though.
Im wondering what power I would get with the VNT.
I have the option of fitting a stock 1Z turbo, or the VNT.
Will I need a special L/H mount with the vnt?
Will be keeping it on the shelf for a little project if it
it doesn't go on this time.
Have got an idea regarding actuation not yet Ironed out.

Hi.
can I ressurrect this one please, as the last question is pretty much what I need to know. I have a complete AFN which will be going in to my Caravelle. I also have a complete engine from a 1Z. Do I have the right combination of parts to get my AFN installed. Should I be looking to utilise the 1Z manifold, or stick with the AFN? It sounds like the vnt turbo won't go on the 1z manifold? I've been advised that the AFN ex.manifold is too long and will sit the turbo too low for oil return. Am I looking at making up a manifold adapter to suit, or does something like the h.a projekt flexi one do the job? Thank you.

Hello,

if you have a turbo with integrated manifold, which some VNTs do, then the turbo will sit with the drain too low. If it's a GT1749V without integrated manifold, then you need the AFN exhaust manifold not the AHU one, and a suitable oil return. The height difference between sump return and turbo return flange isn't great, but it's just enough - it's gravity that does the feeding back to the sump, not oil pressure. Some folk have welded a flange onto the exhaust manifold and have it upside down so the turbo sits higher up, and then have reclocked the oil feed and return - which can be a pain on a VNT.

Hope this helps a bit

MTDi
As the manifold from the AFN VNT fits on upside down,
(Giving a higher mount position)
Has anyone tried installing it this way, and then re-jig
the oil feed/returns?
I know some of the casting bars would
have to be ground off of the manifold (along with the EGR) to fit it to the engine
and avoid the intake manifold(1Z) but will it foul on the engine bars or engine bay?
