After a winter spent thinking which way to go (diesel or petrol) we have finally decided to go the Subaru route. This after very helpful conversations with the likes of Simon Baxter and Rollercoaster (and a drive of his 2.2) and e mails with Richard Jones. After viewing hundreds of posts we will use RJES parts because they will all fit together and the quality is just about universally considered the best. Mixing parts from different suppliers seems too full of potential technical hitches. The only significant remaining part will be the sump as retaining the original Subaru one will negate the point of having a Syncro. However Richard has solutions to even this.
This is going to be done late Autumn after we get back from the Picos but the sooner we find a donor vehicle the better.
So we are looking for a SOHC 2.5 Legacy (2000 - 2003) with all the bits (full loom, ECU, keys, transponder etc). It will probably be best to buy a whole car (rear end write off would be good!) and take out what we need. If anyone has any leads as to possible donors we'd be very grateful for a PM. Obviously things like service history and lower miles will be attractive. Already started trawling Flea Bay and recently missed one that Rollercoaster spotted - it was local as well. We have access to a car trailer so can get to pick up a non - driveable.
We've had loads of really helpful info off here so will post on our progress and hopefully we can add a little to the general body of knowledge.
Thanks in anticipation of any leads,
Pete and Ali
