1.6td caravelle engine smokes on start up and holds back whe
I have a 1986 1.6td caravelle but although it starts well and runs ok when not under load it is extremely slow and after getting to running temperature it tends to hold back this also occurs when climbing hills , I would also add that it emits white smoke when starting and when pulling hard, there are no oil or diesel patches apparent and the levels are o/k can somebody help me please ?

first off this is in the wrong section, but sure it will be moved soon! Right you say white smoke, have you checked your coolant to see if it is like mayo? could be the head or head gasket has gone !

would be worth checking your pump timing, sounds out to me, likely wasnt set right when the head gasket was done.

White smoke is from unburnt fuel or moisture in the combustion chamber.
Would have pump timing checked . Also check fuel pipes and filter condition. Check coolant level

Topic: doka jx holds back on upward gradients with temp r
Posted: Today at 17:37
hi guys my problem is that i have a 1996 doka with the 1600 jx and i am trying to get to the bottom of this problem.
when cold it starts on the button 1st time, and i can run around all day without the engine getting hot, on the flat, that is providing i dont negotiate hills then the power falls off and the temperature rises especially on long up hill gradients. I would mention that also after running for a little while it is more difficult to start when it does it emits a lot of white smoke that soon clears.
last weekend i visited the volksworld show and my heart was in my mouth trying to nurse it along as the best speed for it was about 50mph after which the temperature would rise which would make truck overtaking difficult. I was able to get the temperature to reduce by slowing down and putting the heaters on.
I would like to point out that i have a aaz engine that i could have fitted if absolutely necessary
but first i would like to see if i can get the best from the jx
oil consumption is not excessive or water useage
perhaps some of you guys have suggestions for me
just when my wife thought it was safe it happened again
