which subaru ?

Post by tinman »

Hi everyone,
Which subaru engine is best to upgrade from a 1.9 dg I'm not looking for loads of extra speed just a reasonable amount of power and better fuel economy.
Would a 2.0 non turbo be any good ?
Thanks..

The 2 litre (EJ20) non turbo is probably the most common engine fitted by my customers. Performance / economy wise the EJ22's are very very similar, but they are getting a bit old now (the were superseded in Europe by the EJ20 in 1996). Both the EJ22 and EJ20 are probably the best overall compromise between a bit more power and a bit better economy (around 135 bhp with the cat, etc removed, and 27 - 30 mpg in a 2wd T25). Hope this helps,

Yes it does thanks very much, I thought the 2.2 was most popular but as you say I was thinking its getting a bit old now.
I have access to a milling machine and a lathe would I be able to make my own conversion plate ie engine to gearbox?

Yeah you prob could if you have the time and resources available to do it... but with such good quality developed parts from RJES available,it would prob be a lot of effort and compromise... adapter plate would prob mean a hybrid flywheel/clutch asembly too Or a KEP one imprted from the USA... Richard has done all the hard work there... ...

My view would be if you're going to all that trouble, why skimp on the motor ?

I've recently fitted an EJ25 DOHC into our Syncro, using all RJES conversion parts, which I can't recommend highly enough. Too early to give fuel economy figures, but the drive is superb, 155bhp. As said above, if your'e going to the effort of doing a conversion, why skimp on the motor? It seems pointless to me putting in a 2 or 2.2litre. The 2.5 is no more expensive really. Be aware of the need to do head gaskets on the quad cam 2.5 if there's no evidence that they've been done. They're a known weak spot, but once sorted are no problem.
As for waterboxers, you're kidding right? There is just no comparison at all.

Ok This is more what I'm interested to know,
Is this a non turbo?
Did it fit in ok or did you have to cut the bulkheads I recently read a post where the bulkhead was cut away to get it in.
Do you have some pictures to share?
Thanks.. :)

Non turbo, no cutting of anything whatsoever, just two small holes for self tapping screws to hold header tank bracket. Everything else used original holes. Will add some pics in due course, just back from Vanfest and knackered.

Confirm - non-turbos are the usual fit, in fact if you want hassle and poor fuel consumption, fit a turbo engine...

Most to date are the EJ22 or EJ25, a couple of EJ33s
