You can fit VW diesels ins with 'very little' to a 'quite a bit' of work.

So let's get this straight.... you're running a 1.6NA diesel in a 2 tonne bus and you're surprised at the lack of power?

Would this work?

With the right amount of work and expertise many many different engines can be fitted into a bus.

What would be the implications of doing this?

You can buy an adaptor plate, but after that you're on your own - cooling, engine mounting etc - it's all homebrew.

Well yes, but the engine in the peugeot is *fairly* likely to be mounting transversely, rather than the longitudinal mounting of the bus and the engine's pushing........ look, forget that, you ain't gonna mount that up in there.

Are their any other implications....do I need a rev counter on my dash?

I think putting a rev counter on your dash might well be a job that can be considered separately..... maybe try that before a rather advanced engine transplant.

You've got the mountings for a wide variety of VW group engines. Why not try one of them instead of some hideous french lump?

I can understand you like and trust your Pug enigne - they are good, but you;ll only have the engine and not the pug box (I'm pretty sure it would get very messy if you tried to fit the gearbox too :wink: )

As DH says and I know quite a few others that would too: The VW diesels almost just slot in where your 1.6 was, I've put a 1.9 in, others favour the AAZ coded 1.9TD's. Others even ditch the diesel and go GTi engines - thought they were usually running a petrol wassaboxer engine before.

As for 5 speed boxes, you can get a 5 speed box - best to buy one and get it rebuilt by a specialist unless its history & reliability are trusted. The 4 speed box is fine, its strong and works. As with your Pug stuff, the manufacturers spend silly million sof spondooly on research to make sure these things last - but remember these buses are up to 26 yrs old so expect some crap ones about. Also, the 5 speed doesn't really change top speeds - thats what engines are for, they just spread out the ratios a bit compared to a 4 speed.

One thing we forgot.

So, can you tell me how much work and expertise would be required for a Peugeot 1.9 Td engine?

It's gonna be Sihtloads. Like MASSES. There's a couple of people here who've done it and said it's loads of hard work. What are your fabrication skills like? Confident you can fabricate an engine carrier? With the engine square in the vehicle? etc etc

Yes but not to put on your engine. It's from a Peugeot, FFS! It's not like an M8 bolt, engine's are all very different from amnufacturer to manufacturer!

If I do put a bigger engine in this bus it'll surely need a 5-speed box though, no? So where/how is this accomplished?

NO. the strongest T25 'box is supposed to be the DK code unit, which also has the highest top gear AND is only 4 spd. Get over the 5 speed box thing - put a more powerful engine in and you won't need to change gear so much anyway. Your 1.6 'box will run out of gears with a more powerful engine, so swap it for a petrol with your diesel bellhousing.

rather than gambling money on an engine there is no way of knowing the history of...

Sell the Peugeot and go find a Seat with good history. You could always go find a 2.0 petrol Passat and create a bus that you'll enjoy driving much more than any diesel.

You've read the thread and seen the pictures. Either accept the fact that you're going to have a truckload of work on and have an engine that sits WAAAAY low or fit a VW engine that fits in nicely and simply. I've turned an AAZ 1.9TD around in 2 weeks of spare time. Not 'ard.

ref....but absolute top speed is 50mph...is this right? Should it do more than this? The engine *isn't* screaming at that point,


its worth checking the pedal cable adjustment i.e. check that pedal to the floor gives you pump lever against the end stop -

I can 'cruise' at 60 in my van - woa! 70 downhill and dreadful on an incline

Actually Louey a Peugeot TD is a fine engine....... in a Peugeot.

hi dawn here
just fitting a pug 1.9 td with intercooler in to my hubby's t25 made all the pipe work fabricated the engine mounting bar used three late t2 mounts on engine.sorted the wiring sorted the flywheel out by mating t25 and pug together i also sorced a adapter plate
not bad for me im only a woman what do we know!!!!!
pics on soon just the intercooler to sort :rofl :whistle
