lpg help please...

Post by GTA320Y »

Hi all. well ive just got my first van, its a 83 devon pop top. and comes with lpg,
would judt like some advice/help as im a novice with the vw and also lpg. I went to put some gas in it yesterday first time! anyway i connects the hose (or thought i did!) followed instructions on pump ( or thought i did! :? ) and when i locked lever a shot of gas came out and gas came out of the vent!!!! so quickly unlocked removed the pump and put back and decided on petrol  . I assumed i did something wrong or did i?. is this normal?

It of course then set my mind ticking. the van has had a new verge engine fitted and has only done about 300 mile according to guy i bought from! so at first thought the gas had not been connected back up to the new engine! ive had it to a guy near me whos a vw specialist and he says its all connected fine! but he aint no expert on lpg he said! so thats first question!
2ND is do i have to run the new engine in before running it on gas??.

Any help would be great.. ive noticed on van that its got a club 80-90 sticker, gta320y. just wondering if anyone knows of this van maybe it was one or yours or you knew who had it previous........ :ok

On the running in question ...

A watercooled shouldn't be run on lpg for the first 500 miles and then still at less than 50mph/3,000 rpm for another 500 miles. Others say drive it like you stole it ... I didn't.

As for the gas ....

Try to contact the former owner ... should be on the V5 ... perhaps the filler pipe's not even connected  Otherwise book it in with Steve at Gasure and have the gas properly checked over and set-up. You'll not regret it.

Hi thanks the guy who had quick look said it was all connected as did the guy who i bought it from chris at taylor&sons vw campers in warrington.
I have the certifcite here saying that a steve from gasture fitted the system in 2006. but like i say has since had new engine fitted, probably will have to take it over to gasture. think ill let engine run in a bit then before hand when i test drove the van it switched to gas a drove for few mile before flashing then died. was toldthere was no gas left which was confirmed the other day as the guy looking at van said the tank was empty so im kind of thinking it was just me! its just the gas coming out the vent that got me thinking. thnks again for info.

GTA 320Y was converted to run on gas on 9th May 2006, owner at the time was Dave Shearing from Northwich, we have never seen theis vehicle back for service or tune, so its run with the system it has on it for 4 years without any service or reset as far as I know, he could of course taken it elsewhere, it is fitted with one of the older 60ltr vertical tanks, these systems should be serviced annually.

Hi steve. once i run the new engine in ill give you a call and come over for a service. as far as im aware the vans been off the road for 2 years getting restored. As far as im aware that guy put van in for a new engine down in northwich, unfortantly for some reason couldnt afford to pay for the new engine AFTER it had been fitted! so gave the van to garage. who then sold it to the small vw garage i got it from having been restored! (or so im told!) Its up in the northeast now with me so will defo pop it down to you for sevice etc cheers.
